OP-XY/Z User Thread

Glad to year you’re not having issues! Gives me hope for the replacement.

I used the OP-XY strictly as a drum machine in a band context on the weekend and it was a blast!
I still need some practice for this, but I was pleasantly surprised how playable it feels for improvisation and live recording/live programming drum beats. Some punch in FX work really well in that context, others less so. The tape track is surprisingly great for fills, as well. But I think the biggest win is the pattern per track function, which makes it really easy to test things out and revert back to a safe place.
I went in with a completely blank OP-XY in terms of prepared patterns, but with a bit of preparation (e.g. scenes), I think the OP-XY will be the perfect fit as drum machine for this project. Plus, since I probably won’t be needing all 8 audio tracks for drums, having the option to play (or sequence) the occasional synth melody is also nice.

I couldn’t agree more. It’s one of the the most enjoyable music I’ve heard on the XY so far.

Think i’m starting to get some slightly jumpy encoders, wondering if anyone else is and whether this could be firmware related? Or could it be wear and tear/dirt in the encoders?

Do you mean with ‘jumpy’ that it sometimes skips a step while browsing? Like you have to turn the encoder twice(2 clicks) to go to the next step?

yeah mainly noticed when sweeping a value and on first turn it will jump, sometimes the wrong direction before settling in the right place… I’ve noticed it most on the white encoder which is the most used and abused one. Makes me think its hardware…

Really hate using clicky encoders for doing musical parameter adjustments…

Sometimes I have to turn the encoder twice for making one step in the browser, mostly while browsing the projects. I contacted TE support about this, and they stated that it as normal behaviour.

I usually use similar clicky encoders in cameras… and I already tell you that as you describe it sounds like a hardware failure.

This is great, reminds me of Tackhead

Is there any way to easily find out which (multi)samples aren’t used in any project?

I assume I can’t delete all of the multis and projects, then reimport all of the projects so that the multis they used come with them? That’s how I‘d do it on DT, but I assume it won’t work like that on XY.

I‘ve installed a bunch of multis that were made on PC. I like them, but they make browsing samples such a mess that I‘d like to wipe them and record my favorites new as snapshots. Unfortunately, I‘ve already used some of the multis in tracks and don’t want to butcher the way these tracks sound. But I‘m also not keen on going through all of my projects and checking which multis I‘ve used.

If you save the sampler patch used in your project as a snapshot, the samples it uses will be copied to /fat32/presets/. After that, it should be safe to delete the samples in the user folder, since the snapshot keeps its own copy.

I suspect that’s the intention by TE: if you sample one or more sounds into the device and use them in a project you should save the instrument as a new preset. If it’s intended to be reused in other projects, too, then you can rename it otherwise you can keep it with the generated name. That way you can clean up the user folder from time to time as that’s a kind of temp folder for samples.

The limitation is that if you rename a preset later you can break other projects that also refer to the same preset (samples will not be found).

Of course, why didn’t I think of that! Thanks :)!

Love this.

Question about audio/midi routing.

I would like to connect the OPXY to my Digitakt 2 over USB. Both boxes are class compliant midi devices and as far as I know can send midi bi-directionally.

So far I have gotten midi to work over USB but can’t seem to monitor any audio coming from the OPXY into the Digitakt. I have already ensured in digitakt settings that USB is audio & midi, but so far I am just getting midi, no audio.

Any ideas?

EDIT:
So i figured it out 1/2 way: You have to turn on “USB IN TO MAIN” under audio routing settings on the Digitakt. Unfortunately FX are still not affecting the audio coming in over USB from OPXY.

Anybody successfully send SYNC out to a Roland TR-606? Wondering if I don’t have the right polarity for the 606 (does Din even have polarity?) SYNC24 is active on the multi out, but 606 doesn’t start or stop. 606 works fine w my Digitone II SYNC24.

You’ll probably need a Kenton D-Sync to make it work properly. Alternatively, you might need an adapter that wires the XY’s sync out to DIN pins 1, 2, and 3. Just a note: standard TRS MIDI-to-DIN adapters use pins 2, 4, and 5, so they won’t work for sync.

From my testing, it seems to be compatible with the clock port on Arturia devices. It’s likely that the tip carries the clock (DIN pin 3), the ring carries run/start (DIN pin 1), and the sleeve is ground (DIN pin 2).

Nice track! Did the vocal parts also come from OP-XY?

Thank you very much !
I recorded the vocals in logic in order to use the “take” feature so I could pick out the best version and do some EQ and of course the vocal harmonies. Then I dropped them into a drum track.
The reverb and delay is from OPXY

That’s most likely the issue. Don’t want to add another box to the situation, so probably gonna look for a custom cable or make one.

Thank you!
