OP-1 field

It was embarrassing, He constantly calls out to other synth guys in his vids like they are bros or something. It’s cringey and displays entitlement that he deserves something because he bought an expensive camera and speaks in a slow voice.

Frankly I prefer watching guys like RmR who make tracks with their gear. RmR is a huge resource for Op1 vids. He also just made a whole record on the M8. This is a guy who is creative and not into online drama - I like that.

One thing no tester has commented on; how does the new speaker setup sound? Thanks.

The 20 sec. sampling time is misleading, because you can lay as much down as you want, on the tape (unlimited overdubs), and save many many sample presets. They claim over 160 min. of sample time, total.

People made full records on samplers w/ 1/2 the sample time (SP-1200, for example).

I don’t think anybody has forgotten stuff like this…it just seems incomprehensible to see artificial limits on a sampler

It’s 2022

Yup, RMR and Andrew Huang are both extremely talented musicians that show a deeper understanding of the gear they use.

Loopop is great at making video manuals, not so great at making music though lol. Still, good resources.

Too many of the people on YouTube love to talk and then you hear the music they make and I end up asking “why am I listening to this guy?” They are clearly more about the YouTube side of things than making music. I’ve seen some get into NFTs which is gag-worthy in itself. Definitely went on a purge and unsubscribed to lots of people have the Syntakt launch and OP-1 field announcement.

Well, for me, fitting this all into the form factor of the OP-1F is worth every dime, regardless of what year it is. It’s got 160 min. Of sample time, 8 insta-load projects (ever load a full project in the MPC Live?), and I have mastered the OG workflow, so it’s like me going from a $300 Fender to a $2000 Ibanez. That’s just how I feel about it.

Not sure the comparison is fair but you could theoretically put a 512 TB SSD on the Live though  could be worth the 5-10 second project load time

I actually really like Loopops music style. Better than RmR and definitely better than Andrew, imo.

Most of the music that I’ve seen him play has been the demos built into the device. Syntakt video for example is literally just an Elektron demo.

Tbf TE owe Red Means Recording nothing. He got his name from the OP1 and before he got one he was pretty much a none existent content creator with a handful of followers. (This is in response to Midlife Synthesists upload who said they should thank him).

Yes I know, I own 2x OP1.

My point was the extra price compared to the original, you don’t get much extra sampling time, as in for the drum sampler, 20 seconds.

BTW this is by far the most viewed OP1 video with over 10 million views, along with his other OP1 videos over 25 million views, Yuri Wong.

Yeah I always thought this was the video that put the OP-1 on the map, maybe more for mainstream listeners than synth heads, but still — it has over 108M views.

Adding a comment to stay relevant to this thread topic — I’m looking forward to hearing how people use the different tape styles in the OP-1F. I saw some conversation earlier in this thread about recording to one tape style, bouncing to another tape while keeping the artifacts from the original recording, etc. Seems like some really great potential for sound design in there for people who really embrace the tape workflow.

This is the video that convinced me to buy one. I couldnt get that damn tune out of my head for days.

Yuri Wong made a really refreshing and level headed video of him discussing the op-1 field,
and how we think about gear in relation to making music.

That was actually a really good take

Agreed. “It’s all about having fun crafting emotions.” Very wise.

I don’t see it as an artificial limit, but as a nice way to keep things organized. 20 seconds seems like a nice middle ground to have enough time available to create slices, without being too excessive and lose track of what you where doing. Having used the OT and the sp404 in the past, it’s really easy to just sample long takes of something and get lost in creating lots of slices and variations to leave as many options open as possible. Being limited to a shorter length forces you into really considering what sounds you want to move forward with. And even with the limited sample time, you can just record directly onto the tape with the op-1 and choose the bits you want to chop up later into as many presets as you want. And again, you might argue here, why should I bother with taking a detour through the tape, that’s more complicated! And that’s exactly the point. You’d rather focus on the things you actually want to use in the song you’re creating at the moment. For me, this is one of the “limiting” features of the op-1 workflow, that makes it such a productive (for the lack of a better word) instruments for me. So as far as I see it, there is no artificial limit, it’s just a certain way of assuring to stay focussed and in the flow of creating.

I saw in the YouTube comments to my post I did regarding me taking down my videos that he took down his video because he didn’t want any part of the hostility surrounding the OP-1 Field.

And while I feel that the commentary from synthfluencers were a part of the pitchfork vibes I feel like he shouldn’t feel responsible for it… because we as individuals need to take responsibility for our actions. It’s not his fault that some people are totally unhinged.

5-10 seconds? :joy: Your experience w/ the Live is limited, clearly. A large multitrack project on the Live can take over a minute to load.
