OP-1 + Elektrons (or any other gear for that matter)

although i never missed this feat before, recently i started yearning to sync my OP-1 to my trusty OT+A4 combo.
thing is, the iconnect box is impossible to get, kenton’s usb-midi host seems to behave erratically (at least that’s the picture i’m getting from the internets)

so, is there any alternative? can an iphone be used as an usb host? if so, how?
(posted the same thing on ohpeewon and on guy advised me to look for a kenton on ebay…)

A new production batch from Iconnect should arrive soon.
I’m waiting mine for months!

yeah, but from the new gen iconnectivity only the 4 ver has usb host capability and it costs more than two volcas.

i’d love to have a solution that involves no more than one volca worth of $

I’ve rigged together a solution for my ipad that may work for your needs. I use a powered USB mixer, a powered USB hub, and a USB/midi cable to get both audio and midi I/O to my ipad. I have no idea if you can do something similar with the OP-1, but you might want to try it before looking into other solutions.

The iConnect MIDI 4+ is only $200- and will be worth it’s weight in Volcas when you can route your midi via an iPhone app on a phone that only needs to be connected to Wifi. Or always having the ability to send audio over USB from your iPad or your Phone to a track you’re throwing together on your computer.

Volcas, Schmolchas! iConnectMIDI4+, has made me wait so so long, I feel the Volcas are only a hallucination I’m having while I sit outside in the cold waiting for the 4+! I just hope the endless delaus were for the purpose of to putting out a rock-sold stable iConnect MIDI 4 and they used the 2+ as a surprise Beta test!

I, too, am waiting for the iConnectMidi4+, but I got tired of waiting and started experimenting. granted, the only thing I had to purchase was the USB hub, as I had everything else at hand. I’ll probably still buy the 4+ when it comes out, as I cannot charge the iPad while I use it in this configuration.

The one thing I don’t like about the iconnectmidi is that it only passes audio via USB. Fine if you are using a computer, but like a lot of Elektron users, I am trying to go computerless (other than tracking, etc). I wish they were making an option with physical audio I/O, but maybe they will develop that in the future.

As for the OP, it might be worth experimenting with some class-compliant USB options. Based on my own setup and testing some options out in stores, powered devices seem to work much better…the downside to this being that you may have more wall warts to deal with.

Anyhow, it may not work at all with the OP-1, but if it might be possible to fix the issue with a $20 USB hub, why not try it?

I use a Kenton USB/midi host to sequence my op1 from my octatrack. Worked perfectly on first attempt, and have had no issues since.

I’ve been waiting for the iconnectmidi4+ for a while. Got sick of waiting, but i will probably pick one up if they ever release. Either way, Kenton works great.

Also, keep in mind, that teenage engineering just got parts in for more oplabs. Should hopefully be available for preorder soon.

Zero issues with Kenton here too, Oplab also works great.

I recently scored an old iConnect via Amazon.com
I already forgot that I asked for notification many moons ago when those things seemed to be sold out… suddenly one surfaced fortunately… maybe worth trying again. very cool device!

We had a very good experience connecting and syncing OP-1, Elektron machines, iPad and more using two Kenton devices, and we posted about it here, have a look and feel free to ask questions:

I say go for Kenton. Simple, easy, reliable. Haven’t heard of anyone who had issues with it.

+1 Rock solid is the Kenton.
Keith Mcmillen Midi Expander is another option, I believe.

The Kenton has never let me down, solid.

I´m using Iconnect midi, first generation, works without problems

I realize the original post is 2.5 years old, but you can still find the original iConnectmidi 1 used and cheap if you dig around on some forums.

I appreciate the pair of DIN MIDI ins and outs.

Don’t own one yet, but I know with the Kenton it will charge the OP-1.
Is that the case with the original iConnectmidi 1?

Yes the Iconnect charges the OP-1 as well

iConnectMidi (first gen) + OP-1 user here too. Works well for me.

Hi! There is very simple and cost effective solution - get this: Arduino USB-HOST-SHIELD - https://www.circuitsathome.com/products-page/arduino-shields/usb-host-shield-2-0-for-arduino

this: Arduino MIDI SHIELD

http://www.dfrobot.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=526#.VrkB-8cQ6Hc

and this, of course: Arduino Uno

https://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/ArduinoBoardUno

connect all and upload firmware - https://github.com/YuuichiAkagawa/USBH_MIDI

works flawlessly with OP-1. Power from, for example, iphone charger.

BTW, MIDI SHIELD not necessary - just connect MIDI DIN to Arduino.

Scored a first gen iConnectMidi host for $25 shipped.
