I have had this wacky idea for creating chord progressions.
I sequence my Virus TI with my Octatrack and was very close to buying a Ableton Push to help me create pleasing sounding chord progressions.
Then I had this idea that I may be able to do it on the Octatrack.
So if I program the A major chord on TRIG 1 and the B major chord on TRIG 2 etc etc. Is there a way I can just jam be pressing different TRIG combinations. And then record it
Well, you could do so by triggering the tracks that sequence your chords from the Arranger, but it wouldn’t exactly be easy.
Alternatively, you could enter chord progressions on the steps on a track in a pattern and then either:
[ul]
[li]disconnect the track from the sequencer and trigger it using the Track trig mode, or[/li]
[li]playback the track at varying values of the Tempo Multiplier.[/li]
[/ul]
You could also set up your midi track to play a chain of chords and set up a flex recorder track to record it. Then slice it up and save it. Now you can hammer chords with one trigger press on an audio track in realtime record mode.
JJOSXL for the MPC 1000/2500 has a chord mode that allows you to assign chords to pads (note-if you want to play your own in to the MPC by midi keyboard, you need the large LCD +OS version). This gives you 64 possible chords per track.
1-FINGER CHORDS USING
OCTATRACK’S MIDI SEQUENCER
In MIDI mode, enter PATTERN SETTINGS menu (make sure the REC light is off, then FUNC+BANK)
On T1-8:
Plays Free = On
Trig Mode = Hold
Trig Quant = Direct
Close PATTERN SETTINGS menu
On MIDI Tracks 1-8:
Set each track to the same channel as your attached synth
P-lock a chord: LEN = 1/1 (It’s the setting after “95.”)
You can take a moment here to save this pattern to a different bank. Next time you want to come up with a new chord progression, just copy this pattern to a new location. That way you don’t have to repeat Steps 1-4.
In MIDI sequencer, press Track Triggers 9-16 to trigger the chords you programmed on MIDI Tracks 1-8.
After you find a chord progression you like, use COPY TRIG and PASTE TRIG to place trigs in the appropriate order on a single track.
Mute all other MIDI tracks and hit PLAY.
Enter the PATTERN SETTINGS menu again and turn PLAYS FREE off on Tracks 1-8.
Have tried musicagus’s idea and went into slots mode to trig the samples I made. Could’nt understand why the sequencer would start when I pressed a trig (slot) and it would then consequently repeat over and over again. I just wanted to play the samples like notes, and then maybe hit live record and record a sequence of my samples. Must be some setting I am missing.

Will try robotunes idea also.

with my method, you won’t be able to live-record your playing because the tracks are disconnected from the sequencer.
that’s why Step 6 is necessary.

Thanks, got it to work. Looks like the best approach.
Maybe they will update the code to allow for such a feature…would be nice…but won’t hold my breath.
wow, you can come up with some interesting results if you don’t mute the other tracks that each have the one trig chords on them. Cycle through the different tracks and turn the arp on/off and change the octave range.
Nice.
This means that we can have a set of 8 different chords available on each pattern (if you are not using midi tracks for anything else), effectively turning the octatrack into one hell of an autochord machine!
I also combined my method with your method and have a flex track my impromptu chord mashing.
It works great, lots of possibilities!
