One-shot trigs in A4/AK

Hello everyone,

Guys, does A4 have one-shot trigs like OT has?
I don’t have my A4 near me right now to check this and I also don’t see any info in A4 manual.
I found that this type of trigs would be very useful while playing something like drones or textures. For example you can set one-shot trig on the first step of sequencer with endless reverb and reverberated sound will sounds endlessly. As a result this trig will not be triggered for the second time so reverberated sound will not be interrupted. This will also help to use others steps of sequencer of the same track for others notes/sounds (i.e. without reverb or with different amount of it).

no it doesn’t have these…
but if Elektron decides that it would be a good addition, these would be quite easy to implement without major changes to the pattern structures from what I can see.

trig mutes can kinda be used as a workaround fro now…

Unless I am misunderstanding what you are asking for, it seems like this can be done. I’ve never owned an OT so I can’t relate to the reference. You can set a note length to infinite on the first step and it will endlessly drone. You can turn up the attack some too so that you dont hear the note “hit” each time. Add some reverb and you have yourself a constant drone on one track and one step. There might be a way to acheive something similar by putting max reverb on the first step but I havn’t tried this. cheers

2void: Trig mutes? What do you mean?

2HongKong: It seems that you didn’t understand me correctly. In OT there is a possibility to play trig only once. You have to press func + trig key several times so the trig led will change color to yellow. This is one-shot trig – it will be played only once. If you want to play this trig again you have to arm trig by pressing Yes button (if I remember right). This is very useful if you use very long samples. Sample will play without interuption even when sequencer will start to play pattern from the beginning. This type of trigs would be very useful in A4. I know that I can use notes with Inf lenght, but I don’t want to “lock” the whole track only by one trig – I can use other trigs for different sounds
otes using locks in sequencer. Also short notes with endless reverb sounds very different than INF notes without reverb. I wonder why guys from elektron doesn’t reuse good things from one device to another. E.g. individual time signatures per track like it was done in OT. I’m really needed in this feature.

trig mutes: you can mute individual trigs.

so e.g. you can have your one-shot trig on step one, but mute it. if you want to arm it, you unmute the trig, wait for the sequencer to come around and trigger it, then mute it again.

basically one-shot trigs which need to be disarmed manually

you can use this for e.g. very long arpeggios: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWgOWVOVntw

Ah… I see! Yes, this is useful feature in my case but ony for situations with small amount of trigs to mute. You have to remember wich trigs you have to mute but playing live set it will be dificult. And also you can’t mute trigs simultaneously on different tracks. I want one-shot trigs! But before this I want individual time signatures per track!

Totally agree with you because as it is with same time signature all four tracks, it contributes to the very real factor that A LOT of A4 made “music” tends to sound dreadfully the same…unless taking it step beyond typical use and mixing actual “playing” of piano or other instruments.
I am into ambient and intense drones as well and find this time signature limitation not exactly a creativity cultivating factor.
No…I do NOT need nor want an Octatrack just to obtain “that function”. Can do this on my 1999 Quasimidi Polymorph, why not on A4?

but I don’t want to “lock” the whole track only by one trig – I can use other trigs for different sounds
otes using locks in sequencer.

You would have to assign 2 or more voices to have 1 sound playing whilst triggering more sounds on that track
So in the end you lose a track/voice anyway
As its 64 steps that’s where it ends, gets re trigged, or you manually delete the note trig
If I’m getting what your saying right

-1 for one shot trigs
+1 for probability trigs

everything from nil, once to always

Let me explain in detailes.
My task is in the next – I want to initiate endlessly sounding “drone/background” by only one short trig (e.g. 1/8 note lenght) and only once. It is possible when you set decay value of reverb’s settings on FX track to max and e.g. p-lock REV value of your trig to max in AMP section of synth track. After that when this short trig will be played you will hear the endless reverberated tail of this note. This reverberated signal doesn’t belong to synth engine now – it is in the “memory” of reverb. As a result (as it is a short trig and its sound was “recordered” or “sampled” to reverb) your other trigs (with small amount of reverb in case you don’t want to mix treir sounds to your main background signal) are free for playing other notes or different sounds. Delay also can be used in such way. It really helps to avoid limits in only 4 synth tracks in some situations. But here is one problem – your trig will be retriggered when sequencer will start to play the pattern from the begining but I don’t want this interruption and influence into sound of reverberated signal. One-shot trigs is only one good solution in this case. You can use trig mutes (Func + Trig) but as I wrote in my previous message this may help only in small amount of situation.

Actually there are huge amount of other ways to use one-shot trigs. E.g. you can “hide” melody lines inside track and initiate them by pressing Yes button.

2namnibor: +1! I wonder why Elektron engineers don’t inherit the good things from one device to another? Because they are being chased by releasing new devices to the detriment of the improvement of the previous ones? They have a good sequencer now, so they have to just twek it slightly and add some features to obtain another level of flexibility and just reuse it for future devices. But they just releasing new devices instead of it! Two of my friends have already stopped dealing with elektron due to that fact.

2avantronica:
+1 for probability trigs too, also
+1 for different direction of playing pattern, but these features will be new
for elektron; but one shot trigs and time signature were already been implemented in OT!
