this is the closest I can find
then in the link you posted, Peter Hanes says that even he can not find any direct quote from Elektron saying as much.
I interpreted the post I linked as avantronica getting that info directly from elektron leadership …
Mod Edit - It was obviously humorous emphasis (top brass) … however this confidence/disdain was down to it being info 100% gleaned from inside Elektron (somebody no longer there) … I haven’t seen the proof to the contrary (but maybe the OT mki is different) … the same info came from other directions btw, i haven’t started that rumour, it doesn’t even interest me …
user edit: @avantronica not really sure what you’re trying to say above. If you heard directly from elektron employees that OT USB multitrack audio is impossible then please state so clearly.
Feels like we should get some kind of response from Elektron soon now that Outbox8 is working with Octatrack.
The outbox 8 is a good example, i remember when an initial developer (outside of Elektron) came up with, started to develop, sparked massive interest, got the ball rolling on the concept way back…right back when Overbridge 2.0 was developed for DTmki…in 2020…
This was a user hack! It definitely moved things forward, But maybe that is what it takes to develop things properly…? Loads of time…? It was like 6 years ago.
Then to have the wild west just reverse hack your work doesn’t seem fair. Given the length of time its taken for the outbox to come to fruition. Its complicated because without the initial user hack, outbox 8 may never have become a thing…just like the audio over usb the OT will get in 6 years time…
imagine music without sampling laws. some implementation quirks certainly, but i think it would be a more interesting world.
i hope this ai coding explosion will raise the bar for what major companies have to deliver. i hope one of the more open source platforms pops off. ultimately endless production/consumption is problematic so maxing out less devices would be better. but ai electricity usage sigh. the two digis in one machine with premium time stretch could end the cycle. gear ubermensch. except no crossfader.
Imagine building hardware and software for 25 years, then AI comes along and outcompetes them on their own hardware. By reverse engineering their software.
It’s disgusting
AI isn’t giving people the options, it’s concentrating wealth at the AI ownership level by outcompeting everything else
i mean Lee Sodel really seemed depressed when Alpha Go beat him. i was sad as a human. he quit go after unfortunately. i have an ai evangelist friend who annoys the crap out me for that but now more than ever the llm does seem like a huge leap in technology, for better or worse. but fighting for less freedom always seems wrong to me.
If there is an aspect of LLM use that is beneficial to the average person, it’s this. This is what it looks like. Anyone can take full ownership of their stuff and do what they want with it now.
that was so relevant. and basically says that the more firmware we have the less music we will make . some of it i didn’t agree with but interesting.
You do realize it will lead to less stuff?
I mean at some point if our civilisation persists we’ll all just have the one product: An everything printer that you just need to power and pour raw material paste into, and it’ll make whatever design we like.
I don’t think the massive quantity of stuff that mostly ends up as e-waste is an ideal state of affairs. Sometimes less is more.
Elektron is in the business of selling new/multiple boxes and purposefully leaving features out of boxes that could easily have them. So that you buy more boxes. I get it, it’s a business and they are quite good about updating even very old products which is much appreciated, but the way users on this forum are just backing a corporation/brand instead of celebrating innovation and the spirit of diy hacking and community and new possibilities is quite funny to me. Least punk shit I’ve seen in a while tbh. I get it, we’re fanboys. I also get that many people are against AI and calling these mods ‘slop mods’ points to that… Regardless, cat’s out of the bag. In the end, censorship is pretty much never a good thing, and whatever policy exists on these forums isn’t gonna prevent people from hacking and modding. And likely, it will just give the developers at Elektron and other companies new and better ideas. Modding old hardware is not as easy as you may think. It still requires thought and design. It’s just easier and faster than before… Net positive.
I was talking about hardware. Companies like Elektron that have been pushing the envelope and creating innovative machines are going to be competing with people who will just put octalolz on their tonverk.
You guys are acting like Elektron are being evil capitalists, it’s not the elektron company owners driving ferraris. Their company has historically been doing ok.
You think the ”creator” of octalolz will give a shit about it long term? When OpenAI pulls the plug on their heavily discounted AI usage Elektron and others like with will likely have given up already and the octalolz maintainer can either give up on providing updates for the free software noone wants to pay for or pay extortion AI level fees to keep it running
So was I.
DIY stands for “do it yourself”. Prompting ai to do something isn’t doing it yourself. It sounds more like paying someone or something else to do it for you since you haven’t learned the skill to do it. Posers have someone else stud their jacket and sew the patches on and say they did it themselves. That doesn’t sound punk rock to me.
This is needlessly bleak imo and not really grounded in reality
plenty of these mods are implementing simple QOL fixes and are already rock solid. The more complex ones will either be given up on or polished until they’re stable. Even if AI costs jump up after that, the work is already done. OT hasn’t had an official firmware update in years, neither have the models, no reason why the custom firmwares need constant updates once they’re stable.
It’s not backing a corporation and it’s not fanboy-ism. It’s knowing where you are lol. Who in their right mind would be convinced that they’re going to allow you to promote these things here. Its literally just being realistic about the setting. It’s like meeting up at KFC corporate to figure out their 11 herbs and spices and getting pissed off when they inevitably tell you absolutely not.
It’s actually mind boggling that people aren’t just accepting taking it straight to discord and Reddit where the discussion is active and plentiful and has literally zero resistance from the corporation in question, just like literally any other jailbreak community does.
Honestly, some of us also just like this forum and don’t want it shut down due to the mods being overwhelmed.
Almost any new software you use from this point forward will have an element of prompting code in the code base… Entire agentic swarms debugging and finding solutions to new ideas. That doesn’t mean there won’t be humans behind the ideas or reviewing and implementing code however they see fit. This is the technology sector after all. It’s not poser to prompt code or adapt to new ways of working. Just look at the progression of coding languages. They got easier and easier to understand. History rarely rewards the luddite. It’s just the evolution of tech (as much as I love my vintage machines).
