Omnisphere 3!

yes the upgrade price is definitely reasonable…

I don’t like the interface as a synth but it feels like the interface of an old sampler to me, which I do like
Mr. Persing has earned that turtle neck, he is the Goat.

I just wonder if they are about to drop and update to Keyscape, that is one of my favorite plugins of all time

This is what i thought too, the FM needs an overhaul, it is very basic in Omnisphere.

I see they improved the keyboard split, and allow now also midi velocity to affect the layers. But that is something i could do with a Abelton rack too. (Stacking synth, and playing that synth at this velocity range.

So essentially they rebuild some features from Abelton in their software.

I am mildly excited - becaus Omnisphere was my first software synth i bought, and i still use it regularly (mostly to generate samples, i mangle further in other ways, or to get that transition swoop - or that movie atmosphere into my tracks.

But without any real engine update i will pass probably, or wait untill there is a real need.

If i would score movies though - it would be a insta purchase.

I wonder how nicely this will play with Osmose? It supports MPE but not listed in the hardware controllers

Cant wait to multisampel it to my Tonverk PowerHouse yasss man

The 30m video above has a big section with the osmose. Seems quite well supported.

As for the synth itself, maybe I’m very jaded and cynical, but there was really no wow moment. Some nice QOL features for sure, but it sounds like every other synth from the past 10 years?

Is it possible to get Omnisphere (even 2 would be fine), as rent-to-own?

Thomann sells the license, maybe you can split the payment in chunks. Sound design is possible but not exactly fun. On the other hand the bandwidth and improved macro controls could be cool.

For me the Osmose got really alive with it. Patch morph gave good results as far as i can see from the video.
(reduces the dig further.) I use it as an effective tool, and it got even better at that.

I tend to do a lot of automations, and Omni sucks a bit at this aspect, as you have to allow daw control for each knob.

But for certain aspects its a great tool/ source. If youre a good keys player its probably worth it.

Can a naut tell me what is special about this synth? I’ve never watched a single youtube or looked into it, but I’ve seen the name for years.

Go to youtube and watch the History of this Synth. Spectrasonics made with stylus vst a monster. Many underground producer of the early 2000s used spectrasonic stuff Speedy j ,jefff mills etc

Omnisphere sounds futuristic but still looks like 2008 :joy:

It’s an incredibly deep vst. Pretty much all the forms of synthesis minus a few of the more esoteric. And being tied to your computer’s processor obviously you’ve got synths that are way more powerful than the vast majority of hardware. Very substantial sound library and FX, like VERY substantial. Sounds great. It was, and I think still to a large degree is, a mainstay of any professional sound designer/soundtrack maker. Tons of folks have used it.

That being said, the UI isn’t intuitive. Being the complex thing it is, they kind of designed it trying to streamline things which it is to a degree but it is also a thing you’ve got to learn. And contend with. Some types of synthesis there’s newer vsts out now that do that one thing a bit, I don’t want to say “better,” but easier I guess.

Just watched the reveal video, and overall I’m pretty impressed as someone who’s used Omnisphere since it first came out. I’m not really into deep diving plug in sound design on my laptop anymore, but the new Main view and Mutate functionality being tied into all the new pre-mapped controllers would likely be enough for my needs. $199 definitely seems like a fair upgrade price to me given all you get with this one.

You haven’t tried any of them, right?

Falcon has almost any possible sound engine.
Recent Halion update introduced one of the most powerful FM engine (other stuff like subtractive is here as well)
Komplete includes massive, reaktor and so on.

I think the main thing that makes it special is what it packs in to it, and the sound quality which is exceptional.

  • It’s got an extensive and excellent hardware collection.
  • Some of the best atmospheric sound patches out there.
  • A mix of synthesised and real world instruments.

It’s kinda understated actually in a funny sort of way. It’s not like anything screams at you as being a killer feature or anything. It’s just one of those plugins where everything just kinda works well enough. It has a bit of a vintage feel to it owning to the heritage of the creators to some degree, but that’s no bad thing.

In my mind it’s a bit like someone took Komplete and V Collection and put the sampled instruments/classic synths in one interface. Not as sure about it as a sound design thing because as others say, other synths with modern GUIs can be easier. But as a “find a sound and tweak” synth, it’s just really really good.

Four Tet uses the presets extensively, which is a good enough testimonial for me!

I basically I’ll get a sound. I’ll get the notes I want, and then I’ll get it up and running. On Omnisphere I’ll be like, all right, what are the bass sounds? And I’ll just cycle through loads and loads of them one after another until I find one that’s quite nice. So they’ve got this area. Synth Bass And the one I’ve used is called Plectra Sub. So “P”, I must have cycled through, they’re in alphabetical order, I must have cycled through hundreds before I chose that. But Yeah. The same notes will just play. And I’ll just choose a preset and that’ll be it. Yeah, like. I’m not doing any sound design type of stuff. The main thing is to get the ideas going, but actually do the creative bit.

For that use case I think it’s probably the best game in town. There are loads of demos online with sound examples, so you can somewhat try before you buy.
