OLED display for Elektron Mk1 Analog devices (Four, Heat, Keys, Rytm)

Just got my A4 and Rytm Oleds installed by an engineer! Made up will post pics.

Cannot thank Zigmars enough! What a legend. Also wire transfer was A-ok for me.

Well, do you mean that there is no buyer protection? In a sense true: It is true that you would have to trust my word and trust that nothing bad happens to me in-between payment and shipment (I mitigate this by only allowing to purchase when I am ready to ship immediately or shortly).
I would say that otherwise the payment is as safe/secure as your bank account itself. (The arrival of funds at the account you specify is guaranteed, but I guess that’s not what you meant.)

But yeah, as I thought (and had a quick look now): banks would rarely revert a transaction, they would of course do it, if it’s their fault.
So the safety rests on the trust that you would have in the seller (in me, in this case) and that you have put in the correct account number.

My thinking is that I want to minimize the unnecessary expenses for both sides (buyer and me) so that the amount you pay goes nearly 100% directly to me, so that I can cover manufacturing expenses/design time/make new interesting stuff as efficiently as possible. I hate when I try doing the very best work I can and then having a fee/commission between me and customer for no good reason.

So I choose to take the responsibility myself of the risks involved in shipping damage/bad design etc., I think it’s a better exercise/higher chance of improvement for me to be solely responsible (and always in the loop of what’s happening).

And I just hope that I can build good reputation/trust with transparency and by doing the right thing for every fair customer.

I will DM you. Email stresses me out haha I’m sorry I’m so difficult! I run a business here in the states alone and anything beyond required business email is just :grimacing:

@zigmars are you due new stock anytime soon?

I’ll also be ordering a white OLED (or two) when funds allow. These seem awesome! I have too many fond memories of my MKI analogs, plus I prefer the old form factor, so cannot upgrade to MKIIs, but these display upgrades will be a sweet improvement.

@zigmars DM sent, put me down for 2 of everything when available.

spade shape soldering tip might help with install, idk wtf song is on this video by OMG it’s bumpin

I am still missing last part of assembly (plastic brackets) for this batch.
Should be good to ship in February. @cane_creek , @thumperjack - will let you know as well, once I can ship.

@thumperjack unusual audio/video combo… and I’m lovin’ it :smiley:

@zigmars: do you still take orders for the next batch? If so, please count me in for 1x ā€œwhite on black backgroundā€. Also sent you an email yesterday evening.

I guess brilliant idea’s bring ghosts :grinning:

I’d be down for 3 of those Oleds…

That is a nice problem to have…
Probably everyone would love to have such a delightful company of demanding ghosts as I have here
[insert an AI generated photo of a ghostbuster shooting whatever they shoot at the old Analog Mk1 display with bad ghosting]

Will notify everyone who wrote me in email/PM/in thread, once I can ship.

Cheers,
Z

P.S. When I need to focus on something, I try to refrain myself from checking out email/elektronauts.com more than once a week… just to set your expectations regarding my communication frequency.

@zigmars add me to the list for one of these for my A4K and also for a Machinedrum when you have those later this year. Thank you for all the work you put into this, I know a lot of people are very appreciative.

Wonderful video tutorial! Whooped my over-long photo gallery by a mile (although I have to say, I’m quite jealous of the A4 disassembly compared with AK  )
Great example of installation by cutting and replacing the old headers (I was determined to save the original headers and succeeded, but I wonder if it was worth the time…)

It’s such a simple trick but I’ve never seen anyone plug fasteners into foam scrap that way to organize them, I will 100% be remembering that in the future.

A great tutorial - very detailed - very clear

Now I know that I will not try this myself

But I have a demand for all developers of electronic instruments:

Please ā€œThink Modularā€ and make it possible to replace typical wear-off and failure-prone components by non-electronic-specialists.

Examples:

  • batteries discharge and have to be replaced
  • displays break or wear out over the years

IMO such components can be exchanged by a careful user, if accommodated for exchange.

An example from my past is the exchange of a worn battery in an ancient synth. This battery was

  • hidden between the main board and a mezzanine board
  • after removing the mezzanine board I saw that the battery wasn’t inserted to its button cell holder - it was point welded

IMO ā€œbuilt like a tankā€ can be overdone and often may not be necessary. Now this battery is in a velcro-taped holder with easy access if replacement is required

Great video, can’t wait to take mine apart and unleash the solder iron.

Any news ?

The update is - I still have the plastic bracket part missing.
Manufacturer has some problems. Still waiting on them to ship.
