I’m trying to use my original Beatstep to control some hardware machines, such as drumming in notes to the Erica Synths LXR-02 or using the Beatstep sequencer to control a synth.
Using the Arturia MIDI Control Centre I have assigned MIDI Channel 1 to each pad with different notes, since this is how I’m planning on using it to trigger the drum machine. Its not working as expected.
Looking at the MIDI data in Ableton using MIDI Monitor it looks like each pad is coming in from a different MIDI channel, none of them Ch 1. The first pad shows Ch 2, the second pad Ch 3 and so forth.
I’ve noticed that the Ch will change when I select a pad to send different MIDI notes., none of them actually being MIDI Ch 1. Any ideas?
It’s been a while since I used midi control center but in the midi console see if there’s a drop down for the mode setting. I think it might need to be changed, like if it says control in the mode box see if there’s another option that says drum or something else because the mode you’re in doesn’t seem to conform to a global behavior and that’s what you’re looking for.
I’ll see if I can figure out the path but I don’t have access to MCC right now.
It might be changing channel from user to global in the midi console, something like that.
I have found a solution in the meantime. On the Erica Synths LXR-02 I discovered that sending a MIDI note C1 (for example to trigger the kick drum channel) from the Beatstep, the LXR kick channel needed to be set to receive C3 for some reason. I then assigned each drum sound on the LXR to receive the notes 2 octaves higher than on the Beatstep and seems to work.
This is still a mystery though, both as to why I needed to do this and also as to why the Ableton MIDI Monitor is showing those different MIDI channels…

The midi control center will monitor your pad behavior, you should use that one to confirm.
Some different manufacturers refer to the octaves by different names. They all use the same midi note numbers but I think sometimes one company’s C4 is another company’s C5. Maybe it has to do with that.
As far as the ableton monitor, no clue, but perhaps ableton is receiving and routing it that way or if it’s going through somewhere before ableton check there perhaps.
