Octatrack & SP404 sample transfer?

Hi, I love my Octatrack, but for live performances, I feel the need to add a simple, hands on sampler to throw in one shot samples/voice samples/fx or whatever at any time, no matter where I am in the OT. I´d get a Roland Sp404sx cheap, I think it could do this job well.

Can I exchange the samples from one machine to the other? Can they both read the other´s samples? Both specs say 16 bit/44.1 kHz, wav. Does anybody have experience with that?

And also, because sampling in the SP 404 is so simple and fast (and with batteries!), can I use the Sp 404SX as my general machine to sample my stuff and transfer it to the OT via Computer later? Would you do that?
Sample quality SP 404 vs OT?

Opinions?

Thanks

Don’t know about the old 404, but at least the 404sx uses normal, uncompressed wav format, so it should be all good.

From Roland’s SP-404 site:

SP-404 original format (.WAV/ AIFF import/ export possible)

To me, the OT’s AD converters are very poor quality. The 404sx is all over it in terms of it’s AD conversion.

Sample into the 404 and then transfer via your SD card to computer, transfer to OT. Avoid the OT’s sampling inputs whenever you can I reckon.

Judging by rereading this I feel the need to make sure… there are two 404s, the SP-404 and SP-404sx. I’ve seen both thrown around as if they’re interchangeable o.O

the OG 404 needs an app to compress audio to the 404’s format.

the 404sx uses wav files. it’s in the name, ‘linear wave sampler.’

so, OG 404: you need to convert samples from the 404, or sample it into the OT.

newer 404sx: you can dump the same 16 bit wav files into either machine’s card.
