There’s a pretty rad group for OP-1 kits on Soundcloud, but I couldn’t find one for Octatrack sample chains so I made one.
I posted some basic rules:
Important: You must not post commercial samples here. Vendors like Loopmasters and Goldbaby prohibit their samples from being shared. Same applies for products that use samples like the Native Instruments Maschine, etc.
Rules: Make sure you clearly indicate how many slices are in your chain in the title. (i.e. “Machinedrum Sample Chain - 64 Slices”) and that your chains are in slice numbers compatible with the Octatrack.
If anybody is confused by my Roland TR-330 chains they are round robin samples. You are going to want to use an LFO to switch up which slice gets fired every time you trigger the sound.
Skeptics should try making a beat with a couple of the sounds and then using the crossfader to zero out the depth of the slice start LFOs. It really sounds different, especially the noise in the hats and snare.
I’d love if some members with analog drum sounds could return the favour, I’m hooked on the technique!
I have added a few Roland JX3P chains & a Yamaha CS10 chain I made for the old forum. In fact there was a pinned thread on EU where people shared some interesting stuff, some of which might still be available.
I would also suggest adding BPM to the sample chain filename as I find the Octatrack isn’t always good at detecting these things which leaves room for error.
Ok so basically you load up a sample chain and when you slice it it should be cut exactly as the person recording it has placed them. All the hits should fall in place, right? But it has to be in the exact BPM right? Otherwise the samples would be cut in different places. Or turn off Timestretching then?
Slices on the octatrack are equal divisions (2 3 4 6 8 12 16 24 32 48 64) of the total length of the sample. So the tempo doesn’t really matter, just the spacing of the sounds in your sample.
When I’m playing a samplechain of single hits I turn timestretch off…
samplechain of drum loops or something timestretch on.
Do a quick scroll through the forum and you will find a ton more info.
