Octatrack records silence

Hello,

I’ve been trying to sample with my Octatrack but the whole thing is a huge source of frustration. I’ve read the manual, looked at online tutorials, but the only thing the Octatrack records is silence.

I’m trying to record a synth from Inputs CD, which are going through the main output via DIR (at 127). The Octatrack is picking up the sound and playing it out. But the recorder just fails to record it, even though I’ve not only set it up to record CD, but also the main output. I’ve tried various manual sampling modes (ONE2, HOLD, easy record vs normal record) and none work. I haven’t tried sampling using trigs here, because I’m quite keen to use manual sampling.

I made a video of the issue. Does anyone have an idea of what’s wrong?

Cheers,

It looks like you’ve got everything muted.and what track are you recording to? the recording buffer 1 should be assigned to a flex track.

Thank you. I’m recording on Track 7, which is not muted. I assigned Recorder buffer 7 to that track, which is a Flex track. Am I doing something wrong?

Just watched the vid and found your issue. You’re pressing track+Rec AB, there’s nothing going to those inputs. You need to press track+CD . It records from whichever input you hit the button of. If you want to resample, hit track+midi and it will resample from whichever track you’ve told it to in the options.

Thanks! That worked!

I’m not sure I understand why we need to set up the input in Record setup window 1 then? Is it that INAB and INCD in the record setup window are used only for trigger sampling?

For the audio inputs, it’s so that you can basically have 4 mono tracks going in instead of 2 stereo. So track 1 is set to input A, and track 2 is set to input B, but you’re still pressing the same recAB button for each of them. Same for the resampling option: rec setup window defines which track will get resampled when you hit track+midi. Also obviously like you said, those options also determine what happens when you sample using recording trigs.

Keep in mind if/when you start using recording trigs: if you place a trig and then keep your finger on it, you’ll see that AB, CD and MIDI are all lit up. While holding the trig, you can press any of these buttons to choose which source gets recorded. So you have the flexibility to resample AND record from one of the live inputs at the same time. But the options window takes precedence, so if you have AB and CD set to “-” in the menu, even if all 3 buttons are lit while holding the trig, you’ll only be resampling.

Does that make sense? I’d recommend going through the sampling methods in the manual again if it’s still confusing.

Thank you – that’s very helpful. I had no idea there were so many options. I’ll read the manual again.
