I’m trying a setup on the octatrack that results in a phasing issue:
The idea here is that I want chain patterns together, record a synth on one of the patterns and have the sample loop until I decide to rearm the one shot recorder trig, then record new material, (and then new stuff loops instead). While this is all happening, I want to be able to freely play the synth that I’m recording.
-I have a stereo synth source going into input C/D with the DIR at 127 so I can directly monitor the sound. I’m sampling that sound with a recorder buffer loaded on a flex machine of a track.
-I’m working with 3 patterns:
On Pattern 1 I have a one shot recorder trig and a playback trig both in step 1 of a 64 step pattern.
On Patterns 2 and 3 I just have a playback trig on step 1.
I’ve chained the patterns so they cycle 1-2-3
The phasing issues occurs in the sound when I’m recording (on pattern 1), from audio clash between the playback trig and the direct monitoring.
Solution 1: (hard no) I could turn input C/D’s DIR to 0 and only be able to hear what I’m playing in pattern 1. But then I lose ability to hear the direct sound.
Solution 2: remove the playbacktrig on step 1 of pattern 1 (which shares a step with the oneshot recorder trig). If I do this, then obv there’s no recorded material playing during that step. I can’t add a playback trig here while the patterns are cycling.
Microtiming adjustments make for interesting results: Moving the playback trig ‘+’ still causes phasing (just changes the phase angle). Moving the playback trig ‘-’ causes the playback head to run before the sampler head, so on pattern 1 the original sample plays along with the material that i’m capturing by the buffer, and then on the next pattern you hear the new material. There’s no phasing because the playback trig isn’t playing what I’m actively recording, but this isn’t ideal because I don’t to hear the old and new samples together…
Anyhow. That’s the novel. Anyone find a solution for this workflow? I know pickup machines are more suited for something like this, but I wanted to be able to p lock some of these trigs
