i think the hands on and musical part of the octatrack comes from knob tweakage and crossfader manipulation. you can do some fun finger drumming, and even set the trigs that are played in real time to be quantized while playing. but the lack of multisamples, mute/trig relationship between voices, velocity sensitive sample crossfading, and aftertouch (all of which are mpc features) makes padstyle finger drumming significantly less interesting musically. but knob twiddling and xfader fuckery, as well as jumping between contrasting scenes, can be very satisfying musically. and if finger drumming isnt your forte (such as myself), these forms of musical expression might even be preferable.
