Octatrack MK2 problems (particularly the screen)

Kind of see both sides - unit is touted as hardware upgrade. Otoh this thread explains why a lot more equipment is sold than music made. No offense.

Good morning, sure

This should be the same menu you had in your shot?

It might help to keep in mind that the display has not been designed to watch porn on. Expecting the same visual quality as the screen on your iPhone really isnā€™t reasonable.

The display is there to provide you with information when you need it. It does that much better than the previous LCD panels Elektron used because the contrast and viewing angle are both better.

Unevenly lit areas are a known downside of OLED panels, and can be seen on most phones with OLED displays when a solid color is shown (the display on the iPhone X is supposed to be the first one good enough for Apple).

This problem also exists in the OLED panel in the OP-1. Thatā€™s why the OP-1 user interface mostly uses line drawings and avoids solid areas of the same color.

As with all things, the choice for this display was a design and engineering trade-off made by Elektron.

I think they made a good choice because I watch my porn on my phone, but if you disagree you should by all means return the unit.

I appreciate the original post.

Mods might want to keep an eye on this one - eerie similarities to what happened before/during/after the DT release! Praying we donā€™t get anywhere near some of the nonsense those dark, dark days dredged up!

Oh dear, please donā€™t bring up these old days spirit!
I was just reminding thisā€¦

Humor is a vast subject, Iā€™m unsure a border was crossed here.

But Iā€™ll definitely check my OT mk2 once itā€™s arrived.
For like 3sā€¦
Then Iā€™ll rock the hell out of it, and have my walls bend facing its power!!
Or something like thisā€¦

As someone with vision issues, I can attest the new screens are miles ahead of the old LCD screens at conveying the information you need both in the studio and in dark live performance situations. The backlit buttons are also a huge improvement when playing in the dark.

First of all, you truncated what I write when you quoted me. Hereā€™s what I said in full with emphasis on the part you so conveniently left out:

What exactly is the point youā€™re trying to make by linking to that page?

No really, getting solid colors to display evenly is something thatā€™s much harder with OLED displays than with traditional backlit LCD panels. Hereā€™s a recent example of LG having trouble manufacturing panels with even brightness (from https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/09/lg-v30-hands-on-lgs-oled-displays-still-have-quality-issues/), but you can find many more examples of this effect if you google for them:

Exactly. The point here is that display quality is much more important on a device where youā€™re looking at photos and video than on a device where you donā€™t.

that porn watching is possible on OLED

But that marketing photo of MK2 is displaying that is possible. So if it is possible, I would like it to be possible for me to.

Sure, not a lot solid areas of the same color in most porn. Mostly gradients. Thatā€™s why the somewhat uneven OLED displays arenā€™t a big deal on those phones in normal usage.

You can take the exact same photo if you use a long exposure and do some editing in Photoshop.

so if someones porn is watching solid areas of the same color showing numbers and graphs and sound waves on the small screen, you agree that could be a problem with lo q OLED ? Thank you

No. I think youā€™ve gotten distracted by the mention of porn.

My point is that Elektron has made a choice between the two display technologies currently available for the type of low-resolution 1-bit monochrome panel they need in their products. This choice has probably been made based on the following trade-offs between LCD and OLED:

  1. OLED offers much higher contrast between lit and unlit pixels than LCD.
  2. OLED has a much wider optimal viewing angle than LCD.
  3. LCD provides more evenly distributed light for larger areas with less ghosting than OLED.

I mentioned OLED displays on mobile phones to make it clear that the somewhat uneven distribution of light and ghosting is an intrinsic issue with the current state of OLED technology.

EDIT: And no, I donā€™t think Elektron has cheapened out and chosen a low-quality part for their display. Theyā€™ve just weighted 1 and 2 against 3 and decided that the pros of OLED outweigh the cons of LCD.
