Hello bredrens and sistrens, I’m buying a used octatrack MK1 tomorrow and I cant find any information on how test mode is supposed to work when checking buttons and encoders.
I know it’s func + power and then trig 1, and I know that on the Digi boxes when you press buttons and turn encoders everything’s displayed on the screen, like, clap button pressed, Tom button pressed etc. and when you turn the encoders a small vertical line will move left and right in relation to how you turn them.
I haven’t seen anything about it on the ot MK1… does anyone know? Your reply would be so much appreciated!!
Yeah but it doesn’t say anything about checking the buttons and encoders, it just briefly talks about what comes up on the screen when you enter test mode.
When you’re in test mode yeah? How will I know if there’s a problem with anything? Will something always pop up on the screen or sometimes pop on on screen and some things be represented by the led? Thanks for the reply! Hope I’m making sense here
the progress of a stream of leds may look irregular or the consistency of a press may look irregular
there are visual clues that should be predictable and consistent
when in the mode it doesn’t need explaining, it’s intuitive
the buttons are trivial
twisting the encoders is the main one, the visual feedback should be smooth and predictable - it’s very obvious if it isn’t e.g. if teh encoder has a glitchy feel - this would also be evident on the device in play mode, but less clear - the test mode allows this to be a qualitative test and a direct comparison - it will be very obvious when twiddling or pressing what’s right and what isn’t
some of the first trig buttons will test led colours and some the screen (all white or all black)
when in test mode, pressing everything is allowed, it will make sense
So everything will be represented one way or another, weather it’s on the screen or on the first few trig buttons?
Just want to be sure I’m dead right knowing this stuff, 700 euro is alot to be spending especially with a unit that could be over 10 years old.

Pressing most buttons will just be a clear on/off thing, but pressing the first maybe up to 5 or 6 trigs when in the UI test mode will test screen and all led colours - encoders is the main thing to be noting whether the led ‘scrolling’ is consistent - it’s been so long since i’ve seen one go bad, but it’s very obvious due to the disconnect from your twist to the representation in leds scrolling
get a demo of all aspects operating too and be sure to ask if there’s any issue with the CF card reader, so test with a card in place and ask seller to carefully remove/replace the card to ensure it’s not got any bent pins
encoders and buttons can (and will eventually) need replacing - be sure to test the encoder clicking too when using the device - can’t recall if there’s feedback in test mode for that, i’d hope so. probably there
