I wanted to talk a little about live resampling on the octatrack and maybe inspire some of you guys?
I think EZBOT mastered live resampling and it’s dope but maybe some of you guys dont play 4onthefloor beats and think live resampling is not for you.
I wanted to show how I’m using it making quite heavy experimental music inspired by Lorn, Andy Stott, Ital Tek etc.
I recently played my premiere concert with live audio reactive visuals.
The album is called ENDLESS VOLTAGE
and you can listen the record here:
Because most of the tracks were made from one long improvisation on DFAM+K2, I decided I don’t want to replicate those tracks live. It was nonesense to tweak 100% analog knobs and try to create those weird things that randomly happaned before.
I decided to replicate HOW I made it. So I used same gear and same methods live and 100% improvise.
Those live patterns I found interesting while tweaking (the Eurorack+AR), were recorded on the track 7, then shortcut - "FUNC+Slice grid > 8 slices, and create linear locks. Then changing the scene to hear only resampled version.
And where the magic happens? When you stretch it, slow it down and P-lock rate knob while changing the pitch to +12, it creates that hardly time stretched, almost granular effect. Then you can P lock other things, I generaly like to cut off that loop with the filter envelope and use it as the arragment tool.
Now, you can put the new arpeggio (on Keystep+K2)
and slowly crossfade to that additional melody. Maybe pitch the loop to -12 and start incrasing new patterns from eurorack. Change tempo, find something weird using Monsoon on the eurorack, then resample again.
Now you have nice P-locked pattern on the track 7. WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN YOU WILL CHANGE THE SOURCE SAMPLE?
Haha. It’ the octatrack! I love it.
It reminds me of making TIE DYE shirts when I was a teenager.
You tie the tshirt in a spiral, choose the colors, pour where you want…
But you don’t see the final result until you untie and unfold the shirt.
Here is the full 1h Live Set I hope you’ll like it.
I wanted to hear what are your methods with live resampling and what kind of sounds that provides? Please share your details!
