I finally had a chance to sit down with my new Octatrack MKII and to my amazement the encoders are defective.
They do the bizarre squiggly jumping thing bad encoders do. If I turn the encoder there’s no telling where it will land.
I tested it against my Analog Fours and RYTM. They are all nice smooth increase or decrease .
My Digitakt arrived defective with sticky buttons in the beginning of December. I’ve been without it for two months.
And now this.
Elektron is messed up
What OS do you have? Mine is 1.30D and the encoders are much different than my mkI machines (AR,OT,A4) on the plus side they are much more rapid and responsive, going back to mkI feels like walking through sludge(!) but I have noticed some slight skipping of values, it seems that they might be a little too sensitive.
Are yours jumping without being touched or just when making adjustments?
I much prefer the pot like feel of the mkII encoders though, although it does take some getting used to, I’d hope to see OS adjustments across all the machines to get a consistent feel and hopefully user preferences for sensitivity.
It was right out of the box, so I’m assuming the latest OS.
It looked exactly like a bad encoder wheel issue.
Remember the Emu modules and Korg modules that would have the big encoder wheel? It looked exactly like when one of those goes bad.
At first I thought, is this speed? But no. It’s a blur and could twist 180 degrees and land just about anywhere from 0. 15 or 77. And the display reads a jarbled mess of numbers, so one can’t even see where the number is in terms of 20s, 30s, 40s etc
The MKI clearly go up and down. The Digitakt encoders did not behave like this.
I bought my defective Digitakt from Zzounds and they botched the exchange and it now sits in LA with Elektron. No word at all. I bought it two months ago and have never been able to really use. Elektron doesn’t care and Zzounds doesn’t care. Amazing. I bought a Digitakt and it was defective and this was two months ago. They have my money and I do not have a Digitakt. Very weird situation. 2 months! I bought it two months ago.
The Octatrack I bought from Musician’s Friend. They handled it perfectly. They immediately setup an exchange with 2-day express delivery and a paid for UPS return label.
Musician’s Friend is my go to retailer for now on.
So, I should have a new one here next week.
I finally got a replacement Octatrack MKII today.
Indeed, no doubt, the encoders were bad on the first one that I received. These encoders move in one direction when turned and one can watch the progress of the numbers.
If you get an Octatrack MKII with wild encoders, it is definitely defective. Send it back.
