Octatrack controlling rytm issue

Hi Elektronauts!

Im playing around with a new dawless setup. And i just figured out how to play and sequence the dual VCO on the Rytm Mk2 via a seperate midi channel from the octatrack. Im experiencing a weird thing that when i go an octave down on the chromatic mode on octatrack, it sudenly starts to trigger the other drumpads on the Rytm. All octaves like 0, +1, +2 etc works fine, but as soon as i set the octave to -1, -2, -3, etc. the chromatic mode triggers different sounds on the rytm…

What could cause this issue?

It’s just that you haven’t established the playable note range is only +/- 2 octaves - either side of the ‘neutral’/default

^this you’re not - it’s not the same same would mean that you understood the difference between a pad being hit and the corresponding difference upon that being sequenced back - that’s where the offset was to be found your issue is evidently nothing to do with that and has nothing to do with an offset you’re just noticing that the range the MIDI outputs is camped in the lower half of the midi range - as it always has been - this is not new, it’s centred around Note 36 (+/- 24)

the first(lowest) 12 midi notes will play the tracks at their default pitch … the next notes are the two negative octaves followed by teh two positive octaves

what you are witnessing is normal

There’s +/- 2 octaves centererd around MIDI note 36 which you can address as if you were transposing the pads … any notes lower than this will play the default pads for all tracks

this allows people with a single midi channel to play with to address all the track pads remotely

thanks for the quick reply! Im kind of a newbie so im having a little difficulty interpreting what this means. Is it just a limitation? it seems weird that the dualvco that is great for bass, isnt able to play low octaves or am i still missing the point?

MIDI note messages are independent of the tuning of the oscilators. So you could send the MIDI note for middle-C but the receiving synth could be tuned to a different note. In your case, you’d want to tune the DVCOs down an octave or two.

There IS a limitation: the Rytm will only respond to the note range @avantronica described. When the Rytm was first released (and for like 8yrs following) the oscilators were a bit unstable and couldn’t reliably be tuned too far either direction. Since v1.7 of the OS the tuning is more stable across a wider range. The octave range limitstion made sense when there was also an oscillator tuning range limit. And also, the narrow MIDI note range also allows for playing individual hits from the bottom octave on a keyboard.

So, anyway, just tune your DVCOs down an octave or two on the SYN page and you’ll be able to play basslines in the middle of the keyboard/MIDI note range.

This, and also investigate whether the Rytm is one of the few machines with an octave offset within the sound settings menu … somewhere in the deep settings menu with Velocity Mod Macros etc

I think it might be the AR but can’t check at time of typing

Basically you can shift your 4 octave window up/down a fair bit iirc
