Octatrack alongside iPad

Hey guys, I just ordered my first bit of actual sound-producing hardware ever, which is an Octatrack. Super excited, should be here in about a week (had to special order it from Guitar center). I’ve never messed around with one so I’m trying to wrap my head around the possibilities without having one to play with. It seems to me that using it as a sequencer for iPad apps and also using it alongside Traktor DJ for live shows will be how I will use it initially, although I’m very interested in the looping capabilities and resampling, using it for live effects, etc.

Does anyone use it to sequence midi on their iPad, and how awesome is it? It seems like I should be able to use all 8 midi tracks to sequence synths and drum kits in Nanostudio, then resample into the OT for actual sequencing of songs. Anyone done this?

I sequenced Animoog and iMS20 on many occasions, and I MIDI-sync the Bassline app during my livesets to use the iPad as 303.

This is just awesome considering the price.

OT & Ipad are a flexible couple.

Using Lemur or Touchosc, u can use the ipad also to control features in the octatrack. Actually useful for functions like track volumes, mute/solo, recording and scene jumping while having the OT interface focussed on other things like track parameters or different trig modes.

I also midi sync Loopy HD to resample headphone outs of the OT on the fly, or run that audio through Turnado fx app, as well as use the OT to sequence or sync midi clock to Waldorf Nave, IMS20, Sunrizer, & now with latest update, Samplr.

Only issue I ever had was the way the camera connection kit and usb cable would need taping on to ipad to prevent falling out & still could easily break the ipad connector with small pressure in the wrong spot. The behringer IS202 fixed this for me & added extra options + stand not needed.

I am thinking about a 2nd one & will sus out the ipad mini 6 next year.

I’m definitely interested in resampling the OT back into the iPad as well, especially with so many recording/DAW apps that seem more flexible when it comes to arranging. Samplr is another one that I’ll be using with Octatrack, most likely to sample via the mic or audio copy, then come up with nice patterns to layer over each other once they’re in the OT. It almost seems like using the ipad as a controller and a sound source at the same time would be hard to manage but I guess for jamming in the studio it wouldn’t be a problem. Since I’m doing more club-oriented dubstep and electro for my live sets (just buildups and drops, not tons of time to jam out) , I’m probably going to use it mostly for looping/resampling and effecting live audio coming from a more traditional DJ app like Traktor, and using the OT to layer my own loops and sounds without needing a computer.

Works great. Set up a few of the app synths or like u said beat maker and you are off. Some play nicer than others.

Hi, can you tell me how to connect Lemur on iPad with Octatrack to control it via cabel or wifi?

that’s a slightly surprising question from somebody prepared to take on Lemur as a challenge, anyway, for a given template in Lemur you’ll need to address midi via the midi outputs, so you’ll need a usb device and an apple cck, depending on your ipad model, or a bespoke midi device like the ones from line6 or ik etc - then connect to the ipad midi jacks (not possible via usb cable directly, the way it is on the A4) - it’s great to extend the ‘hands on’ functionality - be wary of the older alesis ipad dock (for older ipads) as it doesn’t support midi sysex (not an issue for the OT though) - there are plenty of midi control apps besides lemur, but lemur is by far and away the most capable and flexible multitouch controller

Thank you avantronica, I use Lemur’s iPad for controlling vst’s on macbook and that’s was easy setup via adhoc, but I want to try templates for Octa.
I have midi box from M-audio or Emu xmidi 1x1 and I don’t understand how and which one of them will do the work. Sorry for my english  Can you explain it to me step by step?

The Emu looks perfect, assuming it’s class compliant, then you’ll need a Camera Connection Kit and an apple ipad with 30pin dock connector
Connecting things up is a question you’d best ask at the Liine forum
but for a simple UI element you need to assign a midi function, there are built in functions and the ability to script your own
you then need to direct this info to one of the 8 midi destinations in lemur and in the settings for lemur you tell that destination to talk to your emu device
keep it simple and experiment with settings !

Ok, thank you very much, I’ll try

I use iConnectmidi2+ and a Lightning-to-30 pin adapter to connect my iPad air running Lemur to my Octatrack via MIDI.
Works great with kraftf’s lemur template(thanks to Kraftf by the way!)

same same except I’m on an ipad 3. the iconnect midi 2 + is such a useful little box…for routing and filtering midi around your rig and for integrating the iPad synths with your DAW with no need for a sound card and conversion stages…
