is there a way to engage a control all functionality, like the machinedrum, with the octatrack?

Not officially, but with a MIDI loopback connection you can access, LFO and p-lock a wide variety of audio track parameters using the MIDI tracks’ CCs. It really opens up the door for complex, instrument-wide automation.
As a bonus. you get to use the arpeggiator internally, record note length and do pre-fx track mutes. Among other things.

i was thinking about that, or external control via software. even considering building a max4live device to let me do it.
