Oberheim DX questions

Hey Guys,

I have recently been getting GAS for that 80’s drum sound and the Oberheim DX looks liek the most cost effective way to go. Unfortunately there are none near to where i live to try out so it is hard to get a real idea of it. I was hoping one of you guys here might have used one int he past and could help with a few questions:

  1. workflow

what is the workflow like? It looks pretty fast from YouTube videos, but then again Dataline makes using the octatrack look easy and i know from experience that it aint…

I like the big buttons / mpc style input but is there anything about sequencing a groove that is slow / laborious? I know tuning the samples is done via a control not the back panel which seems a bit whack. In the same note are the ‘fills’ and ‘human’ elements any good?

  1. this is the biggie - sound quality

I understand how analog circuitry influences sound (vs digital emulation) but i have much less idea how digital circuitry affects stuff. Is there anything about the electronics of DX that means it will sound different to DX samples played back from a sampler? It seems a bit of a waste to blow £1k on a drum machine to do a job i could do with a cheap 12 bit sampler at 1/4 of the price…

thanks!
Anything else i should know, or any particular reason why i should consider the DMX as well pleas let me know!
