I’m on the fence about getting the Peak.
I love the boards of canada synth sounds. I like to use my Roland S1 for a lot of the sounds I enjoy, however, the interface does annoy me. I have come close to swapping it for the SH01a a few times.
Before I think about doing that…
I’m aware that the peak is a power house. Can it comfortably recreate the SH101 sound that you hear on a lot of BoC songs?
I haven’t tried that specifically but I would think with a similar recipe to what you use on the 101 the peak would get very close. Mine sounds great at beefy Rolandy sounds and you have tons of ways to tweak it into that territory between wave shaping and mixing in a wavetable as osc3 and the filter/od.
You can load up to 10 user wavetables (at least on the Summit). I would first look to see if anyone’s tried it yet. My user wavetables include Sequential and Oberheim stuff and it really beefed up the instrument
Just a quick search and I found these: https://www.mercurialtones.com/analog-wavetables-vol-ii
Even the wavetables it came with let me get some absolutely brutal and gnarly analog monosynth type sounds when mixed with a PWM square and a saw. A nice amount of filter drive and drift and good use of the wave shape knob gets you there.
I don’t know much about the SH101, but Peak gets close in BOC atmospheres and is an abslolute powerhouse.
Got Peak two months ago… been surprised what you can get out of it, quite strange sounds
This is my first hardware synth so best shut up about technicalities. But it seems a magnificent machine for sure.
I haven’t even touched the wavetables yet
But there is the software that lets you create your own wavetables, and get the customs already done of course.
While it will never be a 100% match because the filter is fairly different, I would say it can get pretty darn close! I’ve made a number of patches to emulate the SH101, here’s a short example:
I used the peak for the arp lead on this song and IMO it sounds like I always want the SH101 to sound, but maybe not quite the same as “sounds just like the SH101.” It has similar degree of guts and aggression to the sounds I often use my S1 (SH101 ACB emulation) for and kicks harder IMO.
