Novation new workflow vid featuring the OT

TOnly had the OT for a few days so I’m far from learning it all. Just love to attach my BS2 to it! If that launch control could be used without the presence of a computer I would be really interested… But it seems not?

He isn’t using the laptop. He was showing that the laptop has an editor program that can be used to map the controller.

I think this is pretty swell. Id love to see more stuff like this.

Def the way i was trying to get to be able to use faders to control OT track levels(until i got an iPad/Lemur).
I think he is using an iConnectmidi2+ to route the MIDI, as well as ‘converting’ the USB-MIDI of the Novation to 5pin MIDI which goes to the synths and OT.

Could be im very wrong.

The writeup and diagrams show the laptop + audio interface is being used to route the launch control to the octatrack, as well as record the mixdown. I suppose you could use an iconnect + field recorder to retain the same functionality without a laptop, though.

Yup you’re right, good eye.

I had only just watched the video, so nice to have a demo with the set-up diagram!
I use my iConnect to hook up a variety of gear to my octa, and I thought I spotted one in the video. Maybe I was seeing the focusrite? Oh well.
The iConnect is a swiss knife of an interface.
As you say, could totally have been done with an iConnect and a audio recorder, which is exactly the way we track.

Nice one, I’ve had my eye on an iconnect but since I don’t own any iOS devices I’ve kinda been hanging on for something a little smaller.

nakedbob - i still can’t work out from the iconnect website if you can use it without a laptop?

have you tried the iconnect with the launchcontrol XL?

I’ve got a nice small midi set up now using a Kenton USB midi host, Korg Nanokontrol and a Midi Solutions footswtich-> midi convertor.

BUT i’d really like to replace the nanokontrol with an XL, but sadly with the Kenton the XL doesn’t send midi out

No bother at all mate, glad it’s getting some use and not surprised it sounds great with the ms20!

I do like how you class Falkirk as being “up there” when you’re in Glasgow (I’m sure that’s where I posted to!) haha! It’s only a few miles North! Reminds me of a time I went to T in the Park and was branded a Teuchter by a group of Glaswegians despite Falkirk being about, what, 25 miles away! That might read like I’m being incredibly grumpy - I’m not all, genuinely gave a chuckle!

Anyway, I’ve never really found many electronic musicians in the town at all. It’s either DJ’s and club heads or emo’s and punks. Little in between. A typical conversation would go something like this:

Random Person: “oh so you do music do you? Like techno/punk?”
Me: “No, just sort of indie electronic stuff. Love my synthesisers you see”
Random Person: “aaaaah, so you’re like Ross from Friends then”

To be fair, my music is mostly fart noises and bleeps…

Are there any more suitable controllers out there that would do the same job as the launchcontrol here but with DIN Midi?

It would be really cool if Elektron started making them… ones that worked with any of their boxes…

iConnectMidi only works with class compliant devices. I read somewhere that even though Novation claims all their devices are, they are actually not.

I think that would be a great idea. The only one that comes to mind is the Octacontrol (or is it OctaKontrol?). That sort of does the track fading and things though I’d imagine there is a little more potential in the Launchcontrol and its extra buttons and knobs.

It really would be cool to have an Elektron designed bit of kit with autochannel and the ability to “page” through whatever Elektron box (or 3rd party hardware) you have connected.

What I liked about this video from Novation is that I typically sit with my laptop on as I occassionally send vst’s out of Live into the OT. So having it on to use a Launchpad XL isn’t really an issue. It’s got me thinking again about a minor set up expansion - Launchpad XL & a relatively inexpensive multitimbral digital synth module that has midi thru. If only the Blofeld had a Thru port!

fwiw, they substituted the Elektron TM-1 midi interface in the video for their in house focus rite one in the diagram, no usb host kit here

reminder folks that the raspberry pi is a cheap way to build a usb midi hub and more besides

works fine with all usb devices i’ve thrown at it, quite like the look of the XL but the Lemur app is so much more powerful, albeit that it’s a computer i guess

it’s ironic that in the video, for the most part, he barely touches the OT, it MAY AS WELL be a computer if you’re gonna set it up that way, but i get the point of the video, they need a Cenk !

avantronica - is there a simple turn on/it works build for the Pi (e.g. one that doesn’t require a GUI) - i have a couple lying around that aren’t being used and it would be great if i could fire them up to do this

i run a shell script which connects midi usb controllers directly to midi usb devices (including usb>DIN cables etc) it does not require booting into a X11 environment, all done with the core midi utility - all done years ago, when they were new, so memory is rusty, but conceptually it is trivial, the slicker bit is auto detecting which devices are connected and attributing what you want as in and out, have a google first or PM me and i’ll dig out the pi script to see if it’ll work for u

I had an Ultranova that was to be my main performance synth sequenced from the OT. It would go nuts when I connected the 2 machines - wild tempo changes on the arp, random parameter changes etc etc. Totally unusable! I sold it. Very disappointing because it’s a great synth and super portable. Novation and Elektron couldn’t solve the problem for me.

I recon, i could setup my apc40 to do the same thing havent used it for a while though since i got a push, but this could be a nifty application for it.

I also thought about getting a mixer, probably the octatrack is cheaper than the mixer anyways. There isnt an editor for the apc40, to hook it ip the same way like the novtion controller though, would that be an issue, when the octratrk can midi learn anything ?

I dont own one, but since i got a A4, and a RYTM, i wonder if the octa would be a nice additon. I still like ableton though (mostly.)

The iconnect looks also like a very cool device. I could use wifi to midi control things, awesome.

Heres the actual performance from the promo/walkthrough vid I did with Novation before Christmas.
The audio was used for Novation’s Soundcloud post but this video was a bit too ‘home-made’ to use as part of “Project -CALC-” (seeing as it was made at home )
I thought it might be interesting for some folk to see the full track.

If I’m understanding correctly - the launchpad pro changes this up a bit - midi out onboard plus faders, sequencer, controllers etc on the grid simplifies this setup somewhat…
