Hooking up the SPD and 3P is crazy easy. Just one midi cable!
Mine is: PD-8 (Pad)/KD-9 (Kick Trigger)/BT-1 (Trigger Bar) → SPD-SX --[midi]–> Nord Drum 3P
The external triggers and pads and the pads on the SPD-SX can all be set to trigger different pads on the 3P or the same pad at different pitches.
3P set up: Make sure each pad on the 3P is on a different midi channel.
SPD-SX set up: Assign the midi channel and note to a pad to the corresponding pad from the 3P.
The way I have my SPD set up is the kick trigger can either have a sample or just trigger the kick pad on the 3P. If you have a sample assigned to the kick trigger on the SPD, hitting it will trigger both the sample and the kick pad on the 3P allowing you to layer sounds. I mean, you can pretty much do this for every pad.
I dedicate 3 pads on the SPD for toms. I actually prefer the feel of playing the SPD-SX pads over the Nord Drum. It’s more dynamic. The toms are just one pad from the 3P. Each SPD tom pad is the same midi channel but has a different note assigned to it, to pitch them differently. I do this with hihats and weird percussion sounds. On the 3P, it’ll be a regular snare or percussion sound, but pitched way down or up on the SPD.
I used to do the same thing with my Digitakt, but the only downside was the Digitakt doesn’t have mute/choke groups. Which EVEN THE DIGITAKT TWO DOESN’T HAVE. WHY!? ahem Anyway… If you connect Ableton to it, the amount of options you have is even more insane.
This weekend I’ll add the Syntakt to this setup. I have one of those midi splitters, the quadra merge…thru? IDK. But either way, I’ll be able to trigger sounds from the 3P AND the Syntakt at the same time from SPD-SX.
Before I moved I actually used to have a pretty gnarly electronic kit with even more pads and stuffed hooked up. But it was basically the same thing. Pads and triggers going into a drum brain and then midi out to the sound making devices.
Hey thanks for the great info l like your setup it looks like a lot of fun. In my setup l have been using the spdsx, Nord 3p, Octapad and the sp16 individually. I think l will try to connect my sp16 to the spdsx to play the samples from my sp16 as per your info. I have a lot of one shots and loops on the sp16.
Thanks man l really like the mimic you can create some good sounding kits. I just purchased the Punch kit pack from The edrum workshop and it sounds amazing. My kit came with the td20 when l purchased it brand new back in 2006 l have to say Roland built some solid pads and cymbals l’ve never had any problems. It looks like your going to have some fun with the syntakt once you set it up.
Just had someone make this and yeah got only 3 screws in of the 11. Most of the holes dont even fucking line up. Stripped one screw trying to get it in. This thing needs massive tweaking to make it the perfect unit. someone didn’t measure 3 times before finalizing the STL file…
Like I replied before. You didn’t measure 3 times before making this. I only got 3 screws to line up and I got it printed by a well known professional company where im located. The holes on the bottom are not big enough for the screws and most of the midi screw holes dont line up same with the ones on the back.
Sucks as I paid 50 bucks for it and it looks clean and amazing but the STL file sucks and needs major improvements.
uh. excuse me, for resurrecting this thread, but didn’t want to start a new one for a question like this… tried googling and it’s kind of tricky but anyhow:
-the material of drum sticks with something like a nord drum 3p or similar drum pad… any experiences with old school wooden sticks (and which wood?)… felt heads… there’s even one with bronze? … i mean, does it even matter in the end?
Were a bit expensive, but I just loved how they looked…
I’ve put the sensitivity to 20 and threshold on 1 up from the lowest on the Nord Drum that just arrived… will see if these work at all… Hopefully the felt is hard enough to be used.
