Noob question - analog filters

Is running a Roland Boutique, JP-08 for instance, through an Analog Heat technically the same as a digital synth with analog filters? Take the DW-6000 for example. I’m under two years in electronic music and synths, trying to learn something here.

Second question. What is the difference between a fully digital synth and a VST? Are they essentially the same? What differentiates them?

1st question: Depends. Maybe. You may miss out on keytracking by running a digital synth through an analog filter.

2nd question: not much difference, except for the fact that stand alone digital synths will have their own AD/DA convertors whereas VSTs will output through whatever audio interface you own. The VST creates sounds through code or sample playback, a stand alone digital synth can generate waveforms through sample playback or through code. You may have other factors effecting the output whether they be effects or output staging, etc.

Why do you ask?

Thank you for your reply! You’ve now just opened a barrel of worms for me. I think I’ll read up a bit more.

A little confused how anything about a synth can be affected once the sound has left the synth’s output though.

you would be also missing a filter per voice
