Im surprised and disappointed with Elektron’s hardware output for 2018 compared to 2017
All we have is Model:Samples and AH MK2
I expected wonderful new products such as a flagship Keys (Quantum Killer!) , the Digital Mixer audio stems recorder often requested.
Auturia has moved ahead each year and get better and better in comparison
your thoughts?
If samples is the first in a line up, I don’t know why Elektron choose to showcase it first ahead of something more palpable like a synth engine or drum synthesis machine. Unless it’s an Octatrak or something of the sort, samples just don’t interest me. I want a real machine, something to do with synthesis. Elektron seem to be following trends now rather than innovating and it’s worrisome.
Thankfully some others have hit the mark this year where Elektron missed.

Neither agreeing nor disagreeing, but: Arturia’s flagship is the Matrixbrute, right? That came out in 2016 I believe, and I’m not sure they have plans for anything as massive/ambitious any time soon.
A flagship would be nice but I’d be more than happy with another Digibox of some kind, a DigiDrum maybe.
The MS is not interesting at all, for me, but that’s good because I won’t have to part with my money
They don’t release every year, after the Rytm it was 2-3 years before the Digitakt came along. At least they have something new.
I mean, Elektron have an R&D dept.
Data says crazy things that occasionally contradict what seems to be common sense
I feel ‘all we have’ is a little entitled.
You’re likely not meaning it that way, so don’t take it personally, however I think it’s easy to be glib about these things when the reality is that a lot of people probably worked damn hard to put together what they have put together.
What we have is the launch of a new line of machines, which in turn will increase the coffers of Elektron, which in turn will enable more money for RnD and the like, which will lead to more of the ‘big boy toys’ we all really dig.
This isn’t aimed at you per se- I do struggle with people wanting to throw money at the newest/biggest/loudest/brightest machines over and over again. I wonder if people actually know their equipment inside and out, or if its a bit of keeping up with the Jones’/lizard brain kicking in. We need to deprogram ourselves to stop wanting the new shiny thing, and appreciate what we have.
In my humble opinion anyway.
The problem with new equipment is you have to learnt it. I guess most people here have barely scratched the surface of what the present line up can do. Even the OT people are saying that after many years. So periods of nothing can only benefit the electronic musician?
I feel like people are making excuses for Elektron. The MS is just not intriguing as a piece of gear. That’s my opinion, but I know others are thinking the same.
Man, it is what it is.
That’s really the only way to look at it.
I think it sounds pretty good.
If they had released a flagship people will be complaining that they released it instead of finishing OB2 which is still in beta
It’s just samples, lol, it’s not the sound, it’s what it does, feature wise. I already have an OT, and even the DT looks more interesting than this. I mean FFS, Arturia and Korg have released more innovative and intriguing pieces of gear this year than Elektron, whereas Elektron seems to be following the trend set by them.
The DT is an awesome instrument. This expression is confusing to me(I have an OT and DT and they’re like peanut butter and jelly)
I don’t even know what constitutes as flagship model anymore. The days of the mega Mpc workstation are almost done. Shouldn’t it be about the instrument at the end of the day?
Analog keys is so deep that even if I can’t program patches well I can get free presets or buy presets and finish up songs in ableton just by tracking loops out. A 4 voice synth that can make great analog drum sounds. All you gotta do is layer it with samples in ableton and you’ve got tracks.
The same goes for OT and MD. They get so deep each time you revisit them after going through discussion on this forum that you have more than enough features to experiment with and also finish songs in a DAW
This is the way I like to look at it, too. Hopefully this thing sells really well and more people get into Elektron and buy their stuff and then we get more cool stuff.
But in the meantime I’ve only had the MnM for a half a year and the OT for two days…They could take years coming out with a “new, great” product and I’d be okay with that lol. I’m sure the rest of us could stand to learn our machines better, too.
I do agree that the lack of an AK MK II really sticks in my craw. Partly because I want to get some version of it but don’t want to get an original if they’re about to release a new one. I thought for sure when it was discontinued the MK II would be imminent.
It’s really easy to trick oneself that if I got that new shiny machine my music will be so amazing. I struggle with that myself. I want a Roli Seaboard Block but I have decided that I will learn my Digitone inside out instead.
It’s so easy to get caught in our societies that premier material thinking. I think that we are tricking ourselves many times because the music that we are making would really benefit if we focus on what we have instead of what we don’t have.
man, people need to cut Elektron some slack. it’s like when Apple doesn’t come out with a brand new “this changes everything” product every year and people complain and say they’ve lost their way. you want gold every year? want every product to be designed specifically for your wants and “needs”? c’mon…
the M:S will make many people happy (just as previous products have for you). so will Overbridge and AH mk2. close your web browser, go make some music and calm the f down.
