BOTW is 8 years old… good god
even so, does it really need a remaster? Especially if a new Switch is going to be backwards compatible with the old model’s games, it seems a little strange to do…
I’m not sure how big the mainstream appeal of Steamdeck is, especially for people thinking about what console they could buy for their kids. And those of us who want to play Nintendo first party games.
Yes, Switch 2 will probably have a hard time becoming the go to machine where people prefer to play their indies. “I wish this was on Switch 2” will probably not as prevalent a feeling as during Switch’s heydays. And it might also not penetrate as far into hardcore gamers as well as casual gamers markets as Switch 2 has.
I think the success of Switch and the bigger draw this has brought to their franchises will still be enough for a quite successful console. So I’d guess it will be like DS vs. 3DS.
I’m personally looking forward to getting hardware that’s on par with PS4 and see what Nintendo will do with that power for their first party titles. I’m also hoping that indies will come back to releasing the coolest games on Switch 2 as early as possible. And that third partys will port over all of the PS4 generation games I haven’t played because I don’t wanna sit in front of my TV playing games anymore. I could get a Steamdeck for that, but knowing I’ll get Nintendo games as well is enough for me. I’m honestly most excited for all the stuff they’ve been holding back for Switch 2’s first three years, like it was on Switch. My biggest hope is that they’ll launch with a new 3D Mario. As soon as they announce that, I’ll probably get excited.
Not all of them officially
I think there will be surprises at launch. At also I think it will be a massive hit due to the massive backcatalogue. Almost all Indie Hits are already on Switch so Switch 2 will have massive Games right from the start. Rumors say that the architecture didn‘t change much so developers already know the new thing just have more power.
Yes it will be interesting to see what happens. Although, the Steamdeck isn’t the only player - there’s about 5 or 6 of them (or more) - and who knows what Xbox and Sony do next, if they push more into this space also.
I think the point is it creates a space where many titles are available elsewhere in a handheld form now - even Nintendo’s titles if you dabble in the emulation space. I agree though and personally feel like Nintendo have a good grab on the parents/kids market - its safe and PG and every generation there’s a new bunch of kids coming through where Nintendo will be their first console. I think the thing I feel with something like a Nintendo or Sony product, there’s a level of quality in the build that I’m not sure is quite matched elsewhere. The Steam Deck felt very creaky to me and like one of the shoulder buttons could pop off at any moment. Whereas the things Nintendo do have a quality to them and an officialness that’s hard to beat.
This is just my own take, but I personally have felt myself distance from Nintendo over the last couple years. It feels too childish to me. I think if I had a family and yeah - when I catch up with my nephews we rock some Nintendo - but lately I just feel a bit weird playing Nintendo games at my age, cross-generational as they are. For that reason I’m probably a bit sceptical of the Switch. If the next Zelda grows up a bit (it’s got Elden Ring to compete with now) I might be tempted, but otherwise my gaming needs are catered for elsewhere these days.
I don’t know, I found stick drift, in addition to the Joy-Cons popping off if the bracket isn’t extremely snug, both contributed to a feeling of slightly lesser quality compared to, say, my GameCube (which is still fully functional 22 years later including the controllers). The bracket can be retightened but I had to get a replacement set of Joy-Cons a couple years ago for stick drift. I’m not knocking the Switch, overall it’s been a pleasant and fairly reliable device. And for the record, I haven’t owned a Steam Deck and have only held one to try a few times.
I can see why others would feel that way, but for me it’s part of what makes Nintendo games attractive. I get tired of grown up shit sometimes and it’s nice to play a silly videogame that’s for dumb babies like I wish I still was. But also there are plenty of very adult games on Switch at this point. Some of the things I see on the Shop genuinely surprise me these days, considering how heavily Nintendo moderates the games on there (or used to?)
That’s what I love about them. Metroid aside, I don’t ever want them to try to become more edgy or grown up. 90% of AAA videogames are like that, Nintendo are almost the only one left making games with a huge budget that aren’t trying to be movies and aren’t about shooting/violence in some way. I’m appalled by most AAA games and the absurd level to which violence is normalized there. Even if the gameplay is good, that’s often a barrier for me. And often, the gameplay is pretty bland with only a few verbs and combat being 90% of what you’re actually doing. With a lot of world building, story and graphics wrapped around that.
AAA games often feel like synth patches that sound huge but if you take a look at them, FX are dialed to max and there’s basically nothing happening. Or patches that have a ton of modulation to show off what the hardware is capable of, but you wouldn’t ever use that in a song and they’re not even fun to play. With Nintendo games, there’s usually an abundance of gameplay mechanics and verbs, especially with 3D Mario or Zelda. Just moving around my character feels better and is more fun than almost any other title. They feel more like a synth patch that starts with confidence from a strong basic idea and then adds subtle modulation to make it more beautiful.
Of course I’m exaggerating a bit here, but if there were no Indies and no Nintendo, I would never have started gaming again in 2015 after a longer hiatus. It makes me really sad to think about what breathtaking games we could have if the money invested in AAA titles would be available to titles that are less violent and combat focused and tried to be more creative, playful and artsy. BotW was a glimpse into that world and I want more.
This.
We have a Nintendo Switch OLED which gets daily use. A Nintendo 3DS which I often take on trips and such and then we have a PS4 which mainly serves as a bluray player. I’d much rather spend my time playing Pikmin or Zelda than yet another anonymous first person shooter.
I have zero interest in Sony or Microsoft exclusives or a-listers when they’re mostly all the same game.
Quite often people come to my shop trying to find a platformer game for the PS4 or PS5 they’ve just bought for their offspring and I basically have nothing to offer them. Only different kinds of death and destruction in 1080p or 4K.
Really looking forward to Switch 2. I hope that the Deca Police franchise finally comes out on 2. Also a new F-Zero and a new Pilotwings would be great.
I turned 50 this year and my gamer-girlfriend is 45. We have no kids… I don’t see Zelda as childish. I see it as amazingly inventive adventure and basically the essence of great video gaming
I could imagine this lineup when Nintendo unveils its new console:
- Mario Kart 9
- Metroid Prime 4
- A new 3D Mario (Mario Odyssey 2?)
- Triangle Strategy 2
- An announcement about the port of Final Fantasy VII Remake
- An announcement about the upcoming port of GTA 6
Childless 44 & 45 here. Zelda & Animal Crossing for life and PS4 delegated to watching old dvd’s/blurays as well

Sorry I said the C word in a Nintendo thread guys. My bad haha, I should have known better.
In my 40ies now and I really hope I always can keep my love for stuff like Mario or Zelda. It may be naive and childish in some way but thats the beauty of it. If you manage to sink in, its pure nostalgia and a good feeling. So even its just pop culture it means a lot to me. But also more grown up stuff as well. Its just part of my life in a way as some real things.
i don’t have too much information about the switch 2, but are there any indications for the price?
There are very few concrete leaks at this point. As with similar stuff, the gaming YouTube news / leaking sphere is an industry in itself, and a high proportion of their offerings are either claims from dodgy ‘ITK’s (many of whom are playing a numbers game with endless Twitter claims, most of which are later deleted) or something they ‘saw on Reddit’.
It’s all educated guesswork at this point. Surely a new 3D Mario after so long, and to accompany a new console. Ditto Donkey Kong and Mario Kart, I expect. Plus they’ll want to showcase the processor / graphics bump with some great looking ports. And they’ll have one or two surprises up their sleeves, cos they always do.
$400 USD is the figure that’s been floating around the rumormill…
While I wouldn’t be excited by that, many people will be. It raises the question: what 3rd party ports of the PS4/XBO generation would you be excited about (and which will be a good fit for Switch 2)?
I don’t like these games or this type of game at all, but I think the Call of Duty franchise will come to the new Switch and attract millions of users. And I’ll say it again: I’m certain GTA 6 will be released on this new console. Just imagine: on the day the Switch 2 is announced, the presentation video shows someone playing GTA 6 on it. Sony and Microsoft will be sweating!
I don’t think many people will want to play their CoD or GTA games on an underpowered Nintendo system. Nor do I think Activision or Take 2 are interested in porting these. Historically, they’ve always sold poorly and had issues with graphics and performance (which are very important for the audience). I think it’s more likely we’ll see ports of GTA4 or 5 and maybe Red Dead 2, depending on how much work it is to port them. Or Rockstar Tabletennis.
I also don’t think these ports are that exciting to the Switch audience, I was thinking more of JRPGs like Metaphor, Yakuza, Monster Hunter World or maybe some From Soft games. Bethesda was also quite committed to the Switch initially, but I’m not sure it was worth the effort for them (plus they’re now owned by Microsoft).
Never underestimate the joy or immense pleasure of any gamer for any franchise in being able to play in bed, on the train, on the subway, and even in the bathroom.
I still think this is a subset for those franchises. And those who it is important to probably already own a Steamdeck or will get one to play GTA 6 on the toilet. And the track record shows that Activision or Rockstar stopped trying to port their newest games to Nintendo software at some point. If this hasn’t changed with 140 million Switches, it probably won’t with a new system with zero user base.
