If anyone can help me with these newbie-questions I would be so grateful. I can’t seem to find the answer to them online:
1: Pressure Sensitivity
How do I set it up so that when I press a note on my midi keyboard to play the A4, I don’t have to hit it so hard?
I looked in the Function+Global Midi Config menu as well as under the “Note” button (it only controls the onboard keyboard), but I couldn’t find it there so any help would be great!
2: Slide / Portamento
How do I enable slide between the notes when I’m playing on the keyboard?
3: Play another sound with external keyboard
When I play my midi keyboard, it only plays the Track 1 sound, even when I press another track on my A4 and the onboard keyboard plays that sound. How can I play all the tracks with the same midi keyboard?
Thank you so much!
4: Effects
Is it true that I must have the same settings on the effects on all the tracks?
Say I want to have a really deep reverb on my kick, and then a completely different reverb-character on my lead sound, this is impossible?
Or is there any way to get four different effect settings, one for each track? If not, that’s really unfortunate.
(4.1: Speaking of effects, are there effect presets? Like “cathedral”-reverb for instance.)
Thank you! I will download the manual and read it through!
Yes. You can however control the amount of signal sent from each of the 4 tracks to the 3 effects. The analog four has 3 effect engines, not 12.
I see. I wonder, do you know if it is the same way with the Analog Rytm? That the various voices can’t have different effect settings?
This is so sad, heh. I for instance always want my kick to have a really special kind of reverb, and that kind of reverb isn’t always nice with the other parts of the song.
Also, like. I want different kind of delays on different things. I’m surprised this isn’t possible. It seems so fundamental.
You are aware that you can p-lock the effect parameters?
This is exactly how a mixer with effect sends works, so it’s not so strange unless you’re used to throwing an unlimited number of insert effects into each track in your DAW. You’ll be able to do that with Overbridge later this year.
One more question about portamento. How do I change how long it takes between slides after enabling portamento in the sound-menu? Or is it only that slide-time available?
Read up on “MIDI CHANNELS” and “MULTI MAP EDIT” from page 48 onwards.
I’m sorry, but I still do not understand. The “auto channel”-thing seems like the solution to my problem, but it’s on a “track 9” or something?
It says: "AUTO CHANNEL selects the MIDI channel that will give access to the currently active track. If an external MIDI keyboard connected to the Analog Four sends MIDI data on this channel, the keyboard will control the active track. This is useful when for example quickly changing between the active synth tracks to play different Sounds."
But how to use it?
Thank you!
Hmh, I change the midi channel on my midi keyboard to 9, but it didn’t work. I wonder why…
Also, a new question: How do I set it up so that when I change a pattern, it changes automatically when the 16/16 (for example) is at the end? If you know what I mean? Now I have to time it at the exact moment, and it often doesn’t work.
check what your auto-channel is set on, it may not be 9
basically, if you set your KB to the midi auto-channel you have set on the A4, the KB will control whatever track you have selected (so you can cycle through them without changing anything on the KB)
if you set the KB to the midi channel of the actual track then it will just control that track no matter which one you have selected
i.e. the default channel 1, track 1, ch.2, track 2, ch.3, track 3, ch.4 track4…obviously you would want to check your midi settings in the A4 to see if that’s what you have set (you can change it)
Yeah, but it’s weird. I changed the midi channel on my keyboard to 2, 3, 4, etc, but it always just controls Trk 1. I checked the Midi Channels settings in the A4, and everything seems okay there.
My midi keyboard doesn’t have any kind if track selection and I’m having the same issue (only will play track 1). Did anyone find the correct setting to change within the A4?
If your midi keyboard can’t, for some mysterious reason, be changed to send midi on any other channel then 1 you need to change the A4 auto channel to be midi channel 1.
From the manual page 48: AUTO CHANNEL selects the MIDI channel that will give access to the currently active track. If an external MIDI keyboard connected to the Analog Four sends MIDI data on this channel, the keyboard will control the active track. This is useful when for example quickly changing between the active synth tracks to play different Sounds.
Effects are global in the A4, sadly. Truly multi timbral effects come at a price, and are still a bit unusual 15 years after the launch of my much loved Supernova
I’ve done a tutorial video on managing the A4 effects. Hope it’s useful to you.
it is possible of course but you need to use the editor to change channels on the MPK mini. unfortunately you can’t do it from the keyboard. also of course you can’t use it directly with the A4 without a computer or USB Midi host. maybe that controller isn’t the best match for the A4.

I have the Kenton USB host. Got it working setting the auto channel to 1. I know its not the ideal keyboard but since i already had it and the usb host I figured I’d better get the most out of it. Working as I wanted it to now. Thanks guys
