I remember buying my first sampler, a Yamaha A3000, in 1997. Maybe a year later, a new OS was released. I can’t remember exactly what was included in the update but I seem to remember getting a few more filter types, but nothing game changing for sure.

Anyway, the update cost upwards of £100 (around 1/10 of the cost of the sampler) and was in the form of an actual, physical chip. You had to open up your precious sampler, prise out the old CPU and replace it with the new, all the time cacking your pants with the fear of static electricity rendering your beloved A3000 useless in an instant. I carried out the procedure wearing an earthing wristband connected to a radiator pipe.
