I’m actually delaying an OT for that very reason. I have a feeling they have something hardware-wise up their sleeves.

There’s zero chance of this happening. Just an opinion, take it or leave it like any other, but i don’t believe it makes good sense for Elektron or the Octatrack despite the obvious appetite for it. That’s not to say the OT may not take a new shape, but that won’t be any time soon either given the time required that’s evidently in short supply. Anyway, don’t hold your breath !

I wonder what would take for the current Octatrack to be able to utilize Overbridge… could it be done with a hardware mod and firmware upgrade?

Or would it require changing chips on the machine and a firmware rewrite?

It would take at the very least replacing the USB port to one that includes an audio interface for communication with Overbridge and new firmware. The audio interface would also need access to the signal chain, which would require more connections, both hardware, and in the firmware. It is probably even more complicated than this though, and I would doubt that Elektron would offer some kind of upgrade due to the likely complexity of the mod.

It would most likely be a warranty/support and financial nightmare for them and I just don’t see it happening.

Now an Octatrack V2 with Overbridge could happen at some point. I think it would be a great move for Elektron and would sell well.

There’s really no need to hurry though. software like Ableton for example is far more powerful and convenient to use for sampling and manipulating samples than the OT is. Over bridge will be a convenience for OT users but not so much necessary that it needs to be done straight away. People do use the OT more than any other machine to get out of the box.

For me personally Overbridge for the Octatrack is not that desirable. If I have to use a computer anyway I can do things in my DAW. The Octatrack’s appeal to me mainly lies in it’s live capabilities and the fact that you can get crazy with it standalone. Of course being able to record individual tracks wouldn’t hurt, but it doesn’t seem as essential as for the A4.

I don’t see it happening myself. When OB was first announced I did think it would be an ideal fit for the OT but after NAMM and those excellent videos I’m now not so sure. I think Elektron would deliberately look to keep the OT as an “away from the computer performance sampler”. It’d also be an utter USB bandwidth hog if it was to allow full functionality of the OT over USB. The majority of computers would just enter meltdown if dealing with 12 simultaneous tracks from an AK/AR then a further 4 outputs/inputs to/from an OT!

What I can see happening in an OT Mk II would be incorporating the state saving functionality/vst like controls over USB along with better project/file management.

don’t get me wrong though, it would be cool to see an OT OB model but I sort of don’t see the point when something like Ableton plus a midi controller will do it all just as easily. The beauty of the OT is that it gets you away from the computer - I’d rather a Mk II focussed on developing that (more inputs/outputs, fx, potentially polyphony, etc).

I could see Overbridge being expanded in terms of an editor like midiquest(but working) for the legacy-boxes, but as far as USB goes I think its either file-transfer like the Octa or sound-transfer as with the Analog machines. Having to transfer samples to the Octa via C6 would be way more inconvenient than having to use a soundcard to record audio.

…well, we saw quite some progress when it comes to new machines in the elektron portfolio…

now it’s time for some homework…getting overbridge straight…

some os updates for ALL the machines…especially for rytm AND ot!!!

but once that is done, and there’s space to think about new designs…
i start more and more believing in an octatrack mk2…

the whole computer arguments are pretty useless to me…as a music producer i need to record my instruments…and the ot is nothing but that…an instrument of it’s own…

…so the computer is the only way to get tracks really finished…doing complete productions without, is way to nerdy to me if it comes to nailing down an album…
and no matter what you do, a decent mix with total recall is essential if ithat is your profession…and far out of reach with elektron machines only…

that’s the reason why we gonna get overbridge in first place, right?
but true, for the a4 i need it even more…but fooling around with the ot and ending up with 8 separate tracks on a harddrive is defenitly something worth waiting for…
