New MOTU 828 (2024) is here!

What I haven’t figured out yet is how to create a headphones mix. For example, just assign a little more bass to the headphones, which has no influence to the monitors.

Agreed. I use Digital Performer 11 mostly for film projects and it is great. It can easily be used more often for my music projects as well.

I’ve been using DP since it was just MID Performer. I’m actually doing edits as we speak. Gotta love the Shift-L ‘Commands Window’, Find Beats Function, and Sound tempo Analyze Functions. It makes chopping audio way faster than Ableton.

I think one of the Autechre dudes once said his “desert island setup” was a microphone and a Mac running DP.

personally, I’ve never used it.

Yes this! On my hybrid mkIII even the adat inputs have this feature in contrast to the Mk5. So yes more DSP would be welcome!
As a fact I have a battle in my mind… Arturia vs. MOTU
If I’ll keeping my mk3 and using adat I would have 20 inputs then but in sum four HE in my rack in comparison to 16 inputs on Arturia and advanced routing options on two HE.
Soundwise the two should be nearly the same: excellent

That’s such a weird decision. AVB is super useful

Just received my 828 to become the new centerpiece of my audio inputs.
I’ve only unboxed it at this point, but wow things have changed since my 828 mk1 from forever ago. It’s quite heavy, and deeper than I expected.

Funny thing: I just assumed it had 8 analog inputs since that’s what my old one had. Quite pleased to find it has 10. Didn’t bother to read that part since the plan is two ADAT expansions anyway. Definitely useful though.

Came with a physical manual, which surprised me.
Didn’t come with sticky ‘feet’ however, which is fine but I’m not going to rack mount it so I’ll need to get some of those.

Now to figure out word clock, which I’ve never used.

I believe you can also configure the insert returns as inputs aswell if you aren’t using the send/return feature.

Indeed. I’m curious about that one.
Does it mean:

  • 12 analog inputs, or…
  • 10 inputs still (replacing the front), but you get to put the line inputs on the back of the unit (which IS a useful feature for me so I don’t have yet more front-side cables, which I hate)

To be honest I’m fine with either one. I didn’t expect 10, so 12 would be lovely, but no cables on the front but the headphones is quite welcome.

Yeah I’m not completely certain myself as I haven’t ordered the 828 yet (uncertain if I should considering the lack of music etc I’ve been making for some time).

Either way the new 828 has some really versatile and useful features. I haven’t upgraded since the mk2 so it’s a massive leap for me if I do.

So it appears to be still ‘just’ 10 inputs when using the send returns (on the back) for 1/2.
One thing I discovered regarding this is that they don’t use the same ‘gain’ setting as the fronts… it’s separate in CueMix 5. So: the gain knobs on the front don’t do anything. Gain for the rears must be set in CueMix only. No biggie; just pointing it out.

Starting to put it through its paces now as a standalone unit (no DAW). I’ll get to the DAW later… maybe, if I decide to record the audio and finalize in Logic Pro. Probably will because of all the plugins for such things that I can’t mimic in hardware and can’t afford to buy.

I’ve never used word clock before, but I have it configured now as 18i20 (master, since it only has word clock out) to 828 ‘thru’ to Octo Pre. The 828 and Octo Pre are configured to listen for word clock as the source.
Audio routed over ADAT to 828.

Seems to work. Not sure what to look for in the case that I did it incorrectly, and I’ve only tested one pair of inputs per interface at the moment. I’ll hook the rest up tonight and give it a more thorough run-through.

The display is gorgeous, I will say. Can’t wait to see what it looks like when more channels are coming through.

Whoever got my 828es+motu switch at below a firesale price (I can’t get into classified anymore) got the deal of the century.

Every time I look at this new 828 compared to the original es, I can’t believe the feature set they stripped out on the new version.

I was wondering the same, so I asked the rep at Superbooth and it’s coming!
This 828-2024 is using a new platform on top of which several products will be built and the AVB version will come out in September with Milan support.

Just got my 828 this week. Finally sitting down to realise what you said about having to use Cuemix to set the gain on rear inputs etc.

Bit disappointed that a lot of the stand-alone functionality of the old mk2 I had for years seems to be gone.

My fault really for taking it as a given that I’d be able to do all this stuff from the panel without checking properly.

Everything seems really good tbh. Hoping it will spur me on to recording more. At least I can finally use my ‘no longer new’ MacBook Pro for music after over a year.

finally…

at least they kept the AVB. was worried they’d remove that like they did on the new 828

Really happy the 16A came back. Thunderbolt cascading and AVB makes for a nice combo.

I used to have the previous edition of motu 828 and a 8M and both were terrible in their own way, here’s a cautionary tale. The old 828 has capacitors that overheat the components on the circuit board and the heat also kills the display after a few years. That is incompetence or blatant planned obsolescence.
On launch and for more than three years, the 8M was unfinished to the point that you could only use the software to control the volume of the channels (not the physical pots, or it was the other way around) and nothing worked on PC apart from the unit being discoverable over USB. I learned not to trust motu and I would recommend that any buyers wait for proper user reports or simply look elsewhere. It will probably take some time for the faults to be known so it’s best to wait, especially if you have a PC.

I have an 828 mk 2 and constantly have to restart it to get it working again as it keeps copping out. The drivers don’t seem to work well with windows 7 or 10 and the mic inputs developed a constant crackling from the pots. a well known issue. Not worth replacing as the dual gang pots are not easily obtainable and not cheap. I ended up jumpering the connections and bypassing the pots. It’s a shame as I’m happy with the sound of it.
