New MacBook (Pro?)

I’ve had as many issues on my last MBP as on my old pre-unibody MBP (and I’m lucky I didn’t have any keyboard issues), but on the old one they were easy to fix, the parts were cheap and all you had to know to fix it was how to hold a screwdriver without dropping it.
Also I’ve never had a laptop battery shit on me after less than 4 years before, and hopefully it won’t happen again.

Yeah that’s an issue for me too. Luckily I’ve only experienced issues with the Focusrite Scarlett 8pre, and in fairness they did provide an M1 update, but it’s flakey at best.

I have got a MBA M1 maxed out and 16 gb is not enough when using latest Ableton and plug ins

I’d bet on extremely bad thermal management and choking on far too little RAM.

Pretty easily. Surprised you would think otherwise - seems to be a fairly common experience in my circles.

Play a 4 note chord on TAL J-8, unison, both layers. For example. Or Arturia Buchla. Or a complicated Softube Modular patch…

Thanks for all the responses so far!!!

ok, that’s worrying.

Do you have a lot of other stuff running in the background that could be killing your machine?

The M-series CPUs are monstrously powerful, but the i9 is no slouch, and the 16" MBP should have decentish cooling.

(I had 32GB on my i7 5k iMac and I’ve got 64GB on my current M1Max Studio. I ran a lot of plugs on the 5k iMac, and am mostly ITB now so I haven’t pushed the M1Max hard at all)

Mine was a Saffire Pro 40 and I’ve upgraded to a Claret 8+ , hopefully it should all be working well!!
Getting over a hernia repair operation, so I’ve not been able to set it all up yet. the interface arrived yesterday…

Is your harddrive at 99% capacity?

For me, for music, MacBook air. The fanless-ness is killer. And it can handle anything to do with music making.

I have an M2 pro 16gb, use multiple instances or Diva and pigments and I have never heard the fan or felt it get anywhere near as warm as my old dell xps 15, which had constant fan… like even if I moved the mouse sometimes!

It does glitch occasionally on low CPU load. Apparently it does this on occasion when switching from efficiency core to power core? Been a beast for productivity none the less. Ableton user and used to be constantly freezing and unfreezing/flattening etc, but no more!

Not even close. Over 1 TB free on a 2TB drive.

This thread is tripping me out. I bought a 16gb ram mbp in 2019 (intel) and I’ve had to do memory management since at least 2 years ago. I go deep with the internet tabs but still i feel like 16gb isnt even enough.

The i9 has been a huge disappointment for me personally.

Have you taken a close look at Activity Monitor to see if something that sounds innocent is actually mining bitcoins or routing botnet traffic back to Moscow? (the page for Activity Monitor says “Ventura”, but AM has been around for a long long time)

It’s kind of an obvious thing to ask, but is your DAW set to the minimum buffer size available?
It may not be an issue of “i9 can’t handle it” but that the buffer size is set too small for everything that you’re running, or that the interface doesn’t handle it well?

I looked at the activity monitor with only Bitwig running, and the Bitwig plugin host consumes 16-18% of the CPU just on idle. Doesn’t seem like a lot, but it is constant. Is that normal?
