The host might be doing any number of things. That’s where the virtual control surface would be, or maybe you’d be streaming from the host’s hard drive. But yeah, I see what you mean. That was always the neat bit about things like the Nord Modular or Axoloti - you could disconnect from the programmer/editor and take the hardware to the gig.
there is no storage (ssd?) on the pacas? ah… then yeah, I can see the issue.
indeed, I assumed it was like Axoloti… the host compiles, then uploads dsp code, then is independent…
partly, because Id hoped it was like a hardware ‘supercollider’ … where the hardware runs the dsp engine, and the editor is like scide.
hmm, that makes from a hardware perspective (only!!!) pacas a bit odd… given the power we are getting from apple silicon these days… an m1/m2 laptop + audio interface is not going to be much different.
however, I hastily add… I totally recognise, kyma is the marriage of hardware AND software, built on the experience of those at Symbolic Sound… so in many ways the hardware is kind of ‘irrelevant’… its just happens to be the way they have chosen to implement a music solution.
That’s exactly it. It is a system that has been refined for decades, and it shows. I think it makes sense to view it as two parts of a unified whole, but if were inclined to separate them, I’d think of it as Kyma (the software) with the addition of a DSP box that supports it, rather than a hardware device that can be patched with a computer.
Let’s wish for standalone way via Kyma Control on iOS in the future…
Once it’s compiled and running it should actually run, even if you yank the Ethernet from the computer (unless you are reading from the disc, not RAM). But that’s more as a fail safe rather than a feature and isn’t guaranteed to work. Obviously, you lose access to the VCS though.
Being able to start sounds without a computer isn’t a bad shout though, perhaps something that can be raised with SSC
With a Motormix attached or some other controller that was appropriately mapped though you could all but close the computer screen if you wanted.
Egads I miss having a Motormix!
Like a Nord G2 rack…yes?
Just deeper.
My G2 keyboard is like a Nord G2 rack - all its panel controls are screwy or non-functional.
But yeah, way, way deeper. Almost infinitely deeper.
Sorry about the NG2KB
It still works as a G2 Engine if I have connected to a computer, so it’s not a complete loss.

Yes, with the Motormix controls automatically populate. It’s a really nice way of working with Kyma. You can easily midi / OSC map though if you don’t have a Motormix (they are getting pretty ancient, albeit mine works fine)
This has been a great thread for me - the penny dropped that some of the limitations I’ve been running into with sounds I’ve been working on recently can be worked around with a system like Kyma. I ended up starting the Supercollider tutorial and I can already see how to make what I want there. (I also tried Chuck but something about the sound quality wasn’t doing it for me - not sure what is up with with that.) Still have a bit of Pacamara GAS but it’s more off in the future now.
Most examples from Kyma are sounding quite experimental or far out from space
For another impression here a Kyma user that makes Kyma sounds very musical and it kicks-ass!
Never heard this! Fantastic!
are the sound drop outs, do you figure, bad encode or over taxing the unit?
its pretty bad
example 1:40…happens quite a bit after that point.
I cant enjoy that track…im waiting for the next drop. good track otherwise.
I was just going to ask if there was any “music” done with it. I dont like soundscapes and thats all I could find.
I didn’t hear a drop out at 1:40 or anywhere else…?
I can only apologise as most of my output is experimental
Check out Amon Tobin though, he’s Kyma heavy and more musical (though still somewhat experimental).
What type of music, I may be able to give you some examples from the community?
No drop outs at all when played here…
