"Good news, @everyone!

Our friend June has introduced a new custom firmware for all versions of the Elektron Monomachine. It adds a number of new features, makes significant QoL changes, and fixes some old bugs in the factory firmware.

The most notable changes are:

  • Added TRIG CONDITIONS + new menu options & shortcuts for copy/paste/clear
  • Added per-track LOOP LENGTH and SPEED settings + new menu options & shortcuts for copy/paste/clear
  • Added new SPEED options (1/2x, 1/4x, 1/8x)
  • Added WRAP AFTER and CHAIN AFTER settings
  • Added GLOBAL > SEQ > PATTERN SETUP
  • Added quick kit reload shortcut: FUNC + TEMPO
  • Added ā€˜CTL ALā€™ esque feature where you can control a parameter across all tracks relatively, with FUNC + A-H

I would like to ask those who are interested helping to improve the functionality of Monomachine to join the testing of this firmware. You can read the changelog here and download the current version of the custom firmware here.

The Issues section in the GitHub repository is the priority channel for feedback. You can share both bug reports and suggestions for adding any functionality. You can also leave feedback in the custom-firmware section on the MnM Gang server.

It should be remembered that there may be bugs in the firmware during the development stage, so do not forget to make backups of important data!

Please support June in this endeavor and please be patient. She does a great job, so letā€™s help her make Monomachine even better! :pray:

Itā€™s very encouraging to see that it is claims that it

  • Inherits additions from MNMX X.01A firmware, including the kit workspace SysEx command and CC out on track muting

also beware / song slots are used and therefore lost when updated w/ fw:

"In this firmware, SONG slots 13-24 are removed to make room for extended data.

If you have anything on those slots, back them up first (GLOBAL > FILE > SYSEX SEND > SONG+P+K / 013-024), or move them to slots 1-12. Any SONG data remaining in slots 13-24 WILL become corrupted on boot. Existing SNAPSHOT data stored on the +DRIVE is preserved, as long as you donā€™t overwrite it while the custom firmware is installed."

so that leaves 12 song slots after upgrading.

This is incredible. Trig conditions is what Iā€™ve wanted on MnM since they appeared on A4. Thank you to everyone involved in making this happen. You just made my day!

Woah this is sick. Sadly I have no MnM! I wonder if they could do the same for the MachineDrum

Sounds like it was done with LLM assistance, as was the OP-1 firmware - pretty awesome use case to do something that was incredibly time consuming if not impossible before.

I have a Monomachine, but if this custom firmware is LLM spaghetti code, am I correct in assuming that thereā€™s a chance it could slow down the MM?

itā€™s important to remember a human didnā€™t just go ā€œmake some conditional trigs, no bugs yo.ā€ non trivial things occurred, that iā€™m sure ai accelerated.

but each person who does this will bring their own scope and direction.

I canā€™t speak for emā€” (the developer of custom firmware), but for anyone who is skeptical about using LLM in this project, Iā€™ll explain with my own example.

I am a senior embedded software engineer + middle embedded hardware engineer with 9 years of work experience, of which the last 3 years, in addition to my main specialization, I have been a team leader in my main job and also combine the roles of developer, CEO, CTO and PR manager in several of my startups (including MachineStore) in different proportions.

Iā€™m still guided by my own knowledge in order to do research and build a PoC (proof of concept), and LLMs canā€™t help me (yet) at the hardware development stage. But at the stage of software pre-production, I try to switch to using LLM in order to reduce testing time, simplify error analysis, and save myself some routine work.

I still have to make important architectural decisions on my own. We still have to define the documentation structure and monitor every step of even the most powerful models. I will be glad when I no longer need to do this, but the reality is that without a technical background and a full understanding of what LLM does (and without constant involvement in analyzing agent reasoning chains), you will get a constant slip off the rails of the technical assignment.

Unfortunately, we still donā€™t have the ā€œdo everything as well as possible at once so that I donā€™t have to double-checkā€ button. And if for simple projects, like small applications or simple websites, a user without a deep technical background can get an adequate result, then as the project grows, you will get more and more errors, and you will inevitably have to control the work of LLM more and more.

In the end, a project that may seem simple to you at first glance will end up being a real test for you, not only as a professional developer, but also as a project architect and team leader.

The important thing Iā€™m trying to say is that LLM is an inescapable reality. If you are a developer, then you either use them to be faster, or you are lost to the job market. But this does not mean that the requirements for you as a developer decrease. The focus of these requirements is simply shifting.

Specifically, in the case of a custom firmware project from emā€” for Monomachine, I can only say that a person without a technical background and great motivation would never be able to carry out the work that emā€” has done. This is not a level of task where you can afford not to be a professional.

Therefore, please be supportive of this endeavor, because, letā€™s be honest, there are few people in the world who are willing to spend their time and effort on this kind of work. I understand your skepticism, but just give this project a chance. :pray:

Seriously @SyntheticJudah amazing work, getting all this functionality on the MnM without an MCL is so cool. Canā€™t wait to install it.

CTRL-ALL (with revert) alone is worth installing this for.
