I am moving to a new apartment in a month where space for music will be limited. I was looking around for a cheap soundcard to go with Neumann KH80 DSP but then I realized I maybe already own what I need. Currently I have Analog Rytm and Digitone, Octatrack MK2 is coming in next months. I already have a studio, I just want to set a small workspace in the apartment for Elektron mangling. Right now I am mostly interested in pairing Octatrack to Digitone - the new place will be great to learn this duo.
My question for you guys is do you think I need an external audio card or would Octatrack be ok? Probably it would be better to use Digitone as a sound card but this won’t be possible since it will be slaved to Octa. With this scenario I am a bit afraid about volume levels coming out of Octatrack directly to speakers. Does anybody use Elektron boxes like this?
Get a little mixer! Or yeah alternatively you can go directly into those monitors and you can always adjust the volume in the Octatrack. You’re not trying to record any of this stuff when it’s in this configuration, correct?
Id say to be safe and give you options, get a tiny 4 channel mixer this way your are not limited to what machine goes into the other, or you can use the cue outs of the OT as sends and send the main out into the DN… just way more options with small mixer that wont take up too much space. Either way, the DN and OT are a great little setup with huge potential. And congrats on a new home space, sometimes a change in environment can really spark new creativity.
Correct. I don’t have them yet so I can’t judge how much of a dip would be 15dB in daily environment. It will be an untreated place so I think they are right for the job, also my ears love them;) Thanks for your input, now that I think about it, it would be smart to try the Elektrons directly with the speakers for some time before making any other purchase.
I hear a lot of good stuff about raspberry pi and its capabilities but unfortunately I didn’t have the time yet to really discover what it can do. Maybe this year…Thx!
You summed up my feelings about the new place quite nicely:) Yeah I am already used to a mixer, I have a 32ch analogue console in my studio, a small one in apartment would feel familiar I guess…I was thinking about starting a liveact some time ago, maybe this is the calling
How about running Octatrack into Digitone and connecting that directly to the speakers? Then just use the Digitone master volume to adjust levels. Digitone USB into computer for recording. I used to do this before I got my Radius 2V DJ mixer.
Btw I also got the KH80 DSP earlier in 2019 and they are dope as hell! Super lovely sound. I recommend some IsoAcoustic ISO-130 stands to go with them too.
I agree with this. Use DN as your sound card with Overbridge for individual outs and any OT tracks can be monitored from the DN inputs into your daw. Simply solo OT tracks for recording stems one by one
Yes this was my initial idea. But then I thought simpler is better, let Octatrack be master of all and forget about it. Good enough until recordings are needed. You are correct, this will be better. Digitone should act as Audio Master and Octatrack as Midi Master of the setup.
Wicked, you have the KH80 really excited to hear that about them, I have only worked on KH310 so far and loved them. I hear great things about IsoAcoustic stands. Looks like they can work well placed directly on the table. Nice one.
