Neighbours

Do your neighbours impact on your music production in any way?

Like how loud you can play your music
Time you can create(nothing after midnight for example)
Noise from their side or floor ceiling etc.(in an apartment)

Or maybe you live in a detached property and are free as a bird.

So whats the deal with your neighbours?

We’re pretty lucky, even though we live in a semi, it’s only actually attached to our neighbours in one room and the room I do all my music in is miles away from anyone and surprisingly soundproof, so I can get away with being fairly loud until pretty late, but I always either turn it down low or put headphones on after about 10pm, because it’s just polite.

Also, I live on a cul de sac so all my neighbours are pretty old and I think they’d shit themselves if they could hear what I was up to.

You never know. One of them could be biting the head off a Bat

1 acre property as well

My kids sleep on the opposite side of the house so if I keep the door closed to my music studio I can crank it all night long.

In reality I try to go to bed ASAP :joy: I’m always toddler tired.

Probably more than likely taking care of their shopping on live infomercial shopping channels.

Call now toll free and you can get 3, not 1, not 2, but 3 Slap Chops for 3 easy payments!

That would be amazing.

I live in what was one massive house that’s now split into two houses so parts of my neighbours house are underneath me downstairs, I’ve never heard him in my life and never had a complaint from him. I think the problem for lots of people is that new builds use cheese for a support structure and 2 ply toilet paper for walls. My house is old and solid as a rock. Obviously I don’t go cranking it to 11 at 4am but I frequently have late night sessions with no issue. How loud are you guys jamming? I tend to use what’s necessary rather than recording like I’m playing a club set

Normal flat … already had the police coming once … we only noticed because their knocking on the front door was so heavy that the door to my room also was shaking. They were so pissed … coz they were knocking for like 10-15 minutes :v:now I am afraid to make music at all without headphones.

Lately I’ve been looking for a house in Sweden. So cheap there… And freedom to make music as long and as loud as I want.

There’s no greater sight for me than that of a pissed off copper.

I’m lucky that I can enjoy such a thing so freely, I appreciate, but I can’t deny I just love winding coppers up.

I’m playing music at normal volumes, never had any issue with neighbours.
Even if they come, what can they say? The law allows me to make noise from 7 to 11.

Well… it was not a good situation …one cop started sniffing …catching some smell and I wasnā€˜t finding my ID card

That sucks.

Nobody told me little kids can’t handle teh aceiiid music, so I made tiny non-tolerant neighbors for myself. Within my home. Fml

the impact my neighbors had moved me to a studio outside of my apartment.

they, apparently, are not also awakening to their creativity at 11pm+

The many skulls I keep around my door disincline my ā€œneighborsā€ to knocking on my door.

Does everyone in Europe live in 2D houses or something?

I’ve lived in my fair share of paper thin apartments where you can hear the neighbor fart. Happy to have a house.

I usually keep it fairly low. Once in a while I like to crank it to feel the sub for a little bit or do the ā€œfrom the other roomā€ mix test. Crank it up and go to another room, see what stands out. It’s a good way to get your bearings on mix levels.

now I’m lucky. my studio space is a room added to the back of the house, which was previously a patio. since it was basically ā€œoutsideā€ the house previously, it’s isolated well. a decent volume doesn’t bother my wife when she’s in the next room over. and a loud one doesn’t if she’s asleep in the front of the house. closest neighbors’ house is 30 feet over and they have never complained.

my previous house was a duplex. most neighbors didn’t care as they were friends and I knew what times were cool to be loud and what weren’t. a couple I didn’t know, with a newborn, lived there for a year though. no level of volume I tried was OK. the bass always transferred over and they complained. headphones were the only option.

I’ve also played drums all my life. in bands. and usually practice was at my house. so I have no shortage of stories of pissed off neighbors, including cops called, noise violation fines, etc.

your own remote-ish space is a glorious thing.

Donā€˜t get that reference to 2D houses  We build our houses with stones … so theyā€˜re okayā€˜ish sound isolated. But barking and loud talking and bass music is getting through.

Prices went up severely in my area (big city) … even flats are 500k€ … a nice house 500k and up - I donā€˜t want to afford that. In Sweden I could get that for 60k (without having neighbours living 5 meters away … more like 5000…). With 10-20x more land.

It’s normal ā€œflatā€ 2D? :stuck_out_tongue:

Not a term we use in the US. We have Apartments, Condos, Lofts, Penthouses, etc… all in 3D

My last neighbors were living, breathing, barely-sentient nightmares. It wasn’t me making the noise, it was them. They installed a massive stereo system in the garage out back. They blared country-rap so loud that the lyrics (such as they were) could clearly be understood three blocks away. The bass literally shook my floorboards and walls. This went on anytime they were home.

I begged them to have some consideration, maybe work out a schedule so I could do my work. Nope.

The cops did nothing, their landlord did nothing. Other neighbors began moving away.

After six months, I’d had enough. We moved to the farmhouse in which we currently reside. See the trees in the distance in the photo below? In this house, my closest neighbors are on the other side of those trees.

Rave at Scot’s house starts at midnight, everybody.

(Fortunately for me my neighbor is a retired dude that is super cool and spend a lot of time on his back porch with psychedelic lights, I’ll bring him to the rave)
