Ok, I know questions about Banks and Parts have been addressed plenty over the years, even on the old users forum. Well I’ve finally hit a stumbling block and need help in creating a live set.

I fully understand (I think) the purpose for parts. FWIW, This video explains it exactly how I understand it: http://youtu.be/zmmGyBp16dY

Now here’s where I get screwed. The way I see it is unless I use Sample Trigs (or slots mode) or Sample Chains I’m basically limited to 32 Samples per project. (8 tracks x 4parts)

Here’s what I’ve been doing lately and struggling with:
Create a pattern A01 (i use 7 tracks, bcuz 8 is Master, but whatever).

  • A01 is funky groove; Using Scenes I can make plenty of variation within that single pattern to keep the pattern from being monotonous.
  • Now, time to make A02. A02 will contain say 50% of what A01 has in and the other 50% is new samples loaded This requires me occupy Parts #2
  • A02 is good now. Since it is a new pattern I can re-utilize Scenes to make A02 have variation (such as I did with A01)
  • Next I want to transition to A03 with some tracks loaded new samples. (Now I’ve occupied Part 3)
  • Now the same rinse repeat this logic when I’m ready for pattern A04
and now I’m fucked. That’s only 4 patterns. All parts occupied. maybe I can swing a 30mins live set this way.

Go to new bank, that’s no help, it’s still the same 4 parts to play with.
So that’s a total of 8 tracks with 4 parts or 32 total samples (28 in my case)

Only way I can find around this is using sample slot mode… which I LOVE to death, but not how I wanna work. I do understand how to use Sample chains, but also this is not what I wanna do.

Why can’t BANKS BE BANKS on their own? I’d be fine if BANK A was limited to 4 parts (32 samples max)
and then BANK B be a completely new blank canvas, but no, that’s a whole new project.

OR do I have my understanding completely upside down.

please help with suggestions on how I can approach this live set.

funny cuz i read it and i was like who wrote this?! and then it’s you… hehe

No.

Yes.

There are 4 Parts per Bank, not 4 Parts per Project. Read pages 9 and 10 of the manual.

…is this a joke?

sure EACH bank contains 16 patterns and 4 parts…
and EACH part can hold of complete new settings AND 16 SCENES EACH…
which could trigger slices to the moon and back…
and sure you got 16 of these banks with all that parts and all that patterns and all that scenes in one project…

reading a manual from time to time…?

give your tracks always 8 patterns working with two parts each…
makes two “songs” per bank…

makes not 32 samples…all in all…oh my god…it makes 32 “songs” all in all…easily.

your only real limits are some bugs, 256 sample slots in total and some fantasy how to use them…

yes you have 256 slots from which to choose, but once you swap one track’s sample for another, you have wipe out that track’s sample, unless you choose a different part (hence from part 1 to part 2)

I use sample locks for extra samples beyond the main ones for each tune. Kind of like adding spices to a meal.

There are 64 discrete Parts per Project, 4 per Bank.

You can Name Parts. By default, Part 1 of Bank A and Part 1 of Bank B are both called “ONE” - perhaps that was adding to your confusion?

marcel – check this out.

sample slots hold a given sample. switching the sample in a slot works exactly like it does in the md’s ROM memory.

parts are somewhat similar to kits on the md. not exactly, but in the sense that you get 4 parts per bank. each part gets its own set of 8 samples, one per track. (each bank gets its own set of 4 parts, so if you need a 5th “kit”, yes you’ll need to go to a new bank.)

there’s a way around it however. on the ot, you can also use sample locks. so – unlike the md – if you want to use a different sample in one of the 8 tracks, you just need to p-lock each trig to use that different sample. the different sample needs to be in one of the other 127 slots (either flex or static, depending on which type of machine that track uses – you can’t plock a flex machine to use a sample from a static slot).

hope that helps.

Hi Chad,
Yes I’m familiar with Sample Slots, and that will be utilized. I’ve been using SLOTS MODE (which is simply a faster way to do Sample Slots) since I got the OT some 2years ago. I’ve figure out that each bank does indeed hold different parts (I must not have been saving properly). SO… I think I’m fine…

I can manage like this:
Patterns A01 - A04/Part 1
Patterns A05 - A08/Part 2
Patterns A09 - A12/Part 3
Patterns A13 - A16/Part 4
and then continue that logic in Bank B, C, D, etc…
(or anything groupings, doesn’t have to be in blocks of 4)

Thanks man.
