Multi Maps - what am I doing wrong NOW?!

I want to use mappings to trig pattern play, using MIDI notes from the OT.

I’ve set everything up in the Global menu as in the manual.

[li]Set the note range in the mapping entry. [/li]
[li]Select pat.play.[/li]
[li]A4 Perf channel set to 10. [/li]
[li]In the OT, set a MIDI track to ch10.[/li]
[li]In OT patterns A01 and A02, set a trig and correct note value on above MIDI channel.[/li]
[li]In the OT, clock, transport, prog change send all enabled.[/li]
[/ul]

Press play and nothing changes in the A4. Switch patterns on the OT and nothing changes in the A4.

I only want to set 2 pattern changes, so WHY do I have to come out of global slot 1, using the weird combination of keystrokes to select slot 2, in order to create more than 1 entry?! (Why is selecting another slot a different action from every other menu item??? Why 2 keystrokes???) Why is this bizarre architecture considered a good idea or at all usable?!

I’ve been sequencing for over 20 years using both hardware and software. I’ve had elaborate rigs of synths and FX boxes all responding cheerfully to sequenced programme changes. But I’ve never had such pain as with Elektron. I gave up using my Virus C and Ultranova with the OT as my live rig, because nothing would work. Or at least not consistently. A big driver for buying the A4 was I thought, SURELY, it and the OT would talk to each other! Why is this so difficult?

It sounds like you are talking about 2 different functions. Program changes and Multi Map Pattern Play.

Do you just want the A4 to follow program changes pattern for pattern from the OT? Or do you want more than one pattern to change on the A4 in between pattern changes on the OT?

I want a new A4 pattern/kit etc with pattern/part change on the OT. Reading the OS1.1 spec it seemed the mappings were a neat way to do this.

Doing it in the old way has never worked for me, where changing from A01 to A02 on the OT triggers a similar change on the A4. It just doesn’t work, despite rigorous review of MIDI settings in both boxes! And anyway my existing OT projects don’t lend temselves to this 1:1 correspondence in the pattern numbers. I was very pleased when I read about the mappings in the update - I thought I’d be able choose which A4 patterns were called as a song progressed. Sounds ideal!

My programme change pain with other synths had a similar objective, only the note data was all in OT MIDI sequences. It was simply unreliable - I could achieve programme change with the Virus, but half the time it just wouldn’t work. I’m used to the idea of pressing Play and the right sounds all coming up on external synths, and doing so predictably. But sometimes it would and well, sometimes it just wouldn’t!

I don’t know whether OS bugs are responsible for all this or whether it’s me.

I have the OT as master and have the A4, MnM and MD following program changes perfectly. I can detail this setup if you like but it sounds like you want something different than just pattern for pattern changes.

You should be able to do what you want with multi map. You can make multiple entries if they are not sequential patterns or evenly spaced to use pattern inc. The new entries enable is at the bottom of the right column. I was confused as to where it was at first.

I’m going to try this out too and see what happens.

With the new Project architecture, I guess pattern for pattern would be OK. Because I could keep reusing A01 A02 etc on the A4 and it would all be new content for each project. Errr have I understood this right??

If only SOMETHING worked!! I’ve gone through all the MIDI pages exhaustively on both machines checking all the settings and it just won’t. Do I need to buy it an ice-cream?

If you’d be kind enough to give details of your rig, and it points up anything I’ve simply missed, I’d be most grateful Sir.

Syncing them with program changes is pretty straight forward.

On the OT go to project / midi/ sync select send clock and transport. Go to PROG CH and select send and a channel. I have 9.

On the A4 got to global / midi config / midi sync. Select clock, transport and prog ch receive.

Go back out to A4 midi channels and assign PROG CH IN CH to 9 or whatever you used from the OT.

I’ve got a new inquiry with multi map, why can’t I program-from an external controller onto the sequencer? I’ve tried plugging it in from perf channel and still I just get the track voice?

Anybody have a good understanding of this?is this not possible? I can live record it, but can’t program! Thanks!

NEVERMIND! I forgot that I own an OT, which, has the ability to work-around certain limitations such as arp locks on the A4 AND being able to program the Multi-Map patterns onto the A4! Can even use the OT arp to live record the arping through the sound pool! Which has ample room for a bunch if weird stuff
