Multi Map - is it possible to assign to a track?

Of course I love the sound lock feature, but locks prevent you to modify in real time the locked parameters. So obviously being able to map sounds to different keys is a better way to have more than one sound on a single track.

The problem is, I can’t figure out how to assign the entries of the multi map menu to a track in order to do some sequencing. Please don’t tell me this is not possible… what would be the point of having a multi map mode if you cant play or sequence the multi using the A4 keyboard and sequencer? The manual is completely vague about this, and I may be a bit slow sometimes, but I have manipulated tons of synths with multi mode and I can’t figure this one out… Please help!

Well, the Multi Map mode can be used to map sections of a keyboard (either the AK or an external keyboard in the case of the A4) such that these sections play different Tracks or Patterns.

It’s worth watching Cuckoo’s video on this to get a feel for the possibilities:

On Cuckoo’s Patreon page, someone explains how to do it with A4:

“Multi Map works perfectly on the AnalogFOUR with an external MIDI keyboard as well. For those with A4 and external controller, simply set the Performance Channel to match the channel of your external keyboard, and it works like a charm (Global > MIDI CONFIG > MIDI Channels > Perf Channel). Since the A4 doesn’t have the AK’s dedicated “MultiMap” on/off button, the best way to turn off multi map on the A4 is to change the Perf Channel setting back to a MIDI channel you’re not using (e.g. 8).”

Hope that helps

I tried making a tutorial on this, but guess what?
It was a bit shit!
Give it a try, might still help you…

Thanks Rikrak, I saw that tutorial, and it rendered more doubts than certainties. I respect cuckoo but his way of explaining things always gets me more confused. Or maybe what is confusing is Elektron’s criteria for something as old and basic as a multi map.

Thanks Automaggedon, you tutorial is very clear. As I can see on your video the resulting sequence of a multi has plocks. This makes Multis useless for my intentions, which was to have multiple sounds sequenced on a track with each trig adressing a different patch when using different notes, and avoid sound locks alltogether.

Plocks/Soundlocks are fine, but all plocked parameters remain that: locked, so no realtime tweaking is possible. Also there isnt a plock “off” button like on the electribes. What is the point of having a synth sequence with recorded parameter changes if you can’t modify those recorded parameters again in realtime? To explain myself better, you have for example a sequence with different filter1 freq locks, and when it’s running, that filter1 freq knob wont make any audible changes if tweaked.

Plocks should allow knob movements to override momentarily the sequenced parameter, or at least to be able to turn them all off or on at any time. Am I missing something? The A4 is the 4th Elektron machine I have owned, and this always pissed me off, but A4’s Multis were the hope for a solution.

Well now it doesn’t work like that, the way you want it to, the way it “should”.

Trig mutes (rtfm page 37-38) might help some.

Yeah trig mutes should be te way, I’ll have to get much faster in operation to be able to use it realtime.

One trick with trig mutes: I remember getting nice results by nudging the track mutes around with Fn+arrow. You know, if you have 4th notes masked by a trig mute each, just press FN+right once to get them to all play at once.

Edit: to be honest, I’m not quite sure what you’re trying to do, but I saw trig mutes and the need for dexterity mentioned

Thats a good hint, I haven’t thought of before. I’m new to trig mutes. Thanks!

Is it possible to multimap drums on the internal minikeyboard, or does it require external gear? I’ve been trying to make this work for a while, but can’t figure out what i’m missing.

What I understood is that you can’t. You can play the multi maps via an external keyboard. I just got a Rytm so I don’t need the A4 to take care of drums anymore. But it woudl have been nice to have different sounds in a single track without using sound locks.
