MPC Thread : MPC Live - MPC X - MPC One (Part 4)

What about after release only, data nerd?

I was looking specifically after release. Occasionally I wish Elektronauts had an API so I could mine threads for useless but interesting patterns. I used to do this on Twitter until Musk bought and put the API behind a $60,000 year paywall.

Is there much need for an extra SSD on the Live 3 given the expanded size / improved capability of the internal SSD? I recall previous gen couldnt read internal SSD when plugged into a computer but they fixed this with the usb c afaik.

Basic answer is yes. Even with the increased size I would consider an external. The general consensus is if the file structures of the original content is disturbed it may cause issues.

I’m sure someone out there has mixed things up royally and their machine works fine.

As someone whose setup is completely based around an MPC it’s been exciting to see all the activity on here, the new Live 3, and get the new OS and pro pack for my X.

But man, I hope things stabilize a little, I feel like the groove I was in on 2.X when things were moving incrementally was good for me - not learning new techniques or plugins but just digging in and making tracks. Ever since I moved to 3 (which has a LOT of stuff I like - I would find it hard to go back to 2.15 now) it just feels like I’ve been unstable ground.

Every track I make now involves a bunch of new techniques I’m trying to figure out and takes longer to finish. It’s harder to dig in and establish my new post 3.0 process. (I guess what you’d call ā€œworkflow.ā€) Now I’m wrestling with clips, which are awesome, but it’s yet another thing I have no muscle memory with, on top of which on an old MPC it’s so screen-based.

You’ll be fine once you master the things that work for you. You got this bruv :muscle:

They definitely could/should have increased the amount of inserts/sends per track. I’d be surprised/disappointed if this doesn’t expand in future updates.

That would be my biggest request after performance optimization to increase battery life.

For now I just view it as job security for Live 2 which retains its value and title as best mobile MPC.

Currently, im using submixes to maximize the amount of inserts/sends and putting DJ/Punch fx using Flexbeat on the Master/Aux outs.

Mapping them to sequencer buttons via Qlink/pad editor is a splendidly absurd mess. Akai knocked the new sequencer buttons completely out of the park. The amount of depth and flexibility in shaping a sound/performance/production is staggering.

Live 3 has introduced a new good problem. I have soooo much damn fun that I’m having a hard time knowing when to stop. This led to a really groovy new workflow.

I made a dope beat then couldn’t stop. End up making 2 dope beats in the same project. Found out Akai wants you to do this that’s why you can assign tracks to ā€œA/Bā€ and crossfade between em. Add the punch fx and you have a two deck dj rig out of this world. I know this is not breaking news to those already aware but I haven’t RTFM so I’m learning everything real time.

Akai is ahead … where’s Elektron?

Off topic Elektron thoughts

I personally don’t look at it as a competition exactly, but I do hope that the latest generation of grooveboxes (Push 3, Live 3, OP-XY, etc) pushes Elektron to iterate more on what they’ve got. The DT2/DN2 and TV show that they are certainly listening to feedback, but I think they could go even further. These devices all have some Elektron inspiration and take that DNA into interesting territory.

On-topic, I ordered the Live 3 and sold my One+ to help fund it. From prior reading, I should assume previously-created Programs from 2.15 may or may not load, and if they do load they might not load properly on mpc3, right? I know Projects won’t load properly. Will the same hold true for keygroups? I’ll likely start from a blank slate anyway, but I’d like to have appropriate expectations.

Regarding storage - should I consider upgrading my SD card? I know I can insert a SSD but I’m not ready to make the financial commitment just yet.

I abandoned my MPC 1000 w JJOS when the OT mk1 came out 15?years ago. OT became the center of my Live PA rig.

It’s funny I’m considering an MPC Live3 all this time later, I rarely do Live performances anymore, and MPC seems like a welcome/portable alternative to my Studio and DAW

If you asked Akai, they’d tell you it should all work just fine. I think projects are supposed to work if they’re already in a 3-like configuration with one program per track and track order the same throughout each sequence. Pretty sure your keygroups and drum programs will work just fine-- I haven’t used old keygroups as much as drum programs, but my old drum programs have worked fine.

I haven’t installed a SDD yet either. I almost pulled the trigger because Amazon had a recent sale on them. Perhaps Cyber Monday when they drop again just to have it but tbh—I don’t think it’ll ever actually be necessary.

I use MPc every day for work. IMO, it’s almost unbelievable that Akai gave us 128g. When you look at what Roland, TE, and Elektron devices come with it’s incredibly generous and enough for 99% of users without ever needing anything additional. Files really aren’t that damn big.

For now I’m cool with the additional 512g sd I had in L2. All official plugins and the expansions that came with L3 remain on factory drive. All my paid expansions and user sounds go on SD. Everything loads instantly so I don’t perceive any difference. If I didn’t already have the SD I wouldn’t have rushed out and got one. For why?

I do prefer SD because I can pop it out of L3 and into my other MPC (soon to be more I’m sure lol) and also i like editing/organizing/chopping sounds on the go in iPad or other devices. SDD means controller mode to do anything which is obviously more restricting. However I am pleased to know that SDDs now offer the same speed as the L3 internal flash wish is great considering L2 throttled SDD to usb3 speed regardless of spec.

Awesome, that’s how I typically work anyway, so the old projects should transition nicely!

Yeah my Sd card is only 64 GB w/ a 150 mb/s speed, a 128 Gb internal HD is more than enough for me. I just get nervous about the problems that can occur when unintentionally messing with files on the built-in drive and never used it aside from installing plugins etc.

I can dig it. While I don’t recommend it, I can confirm the factory drive isn’t as sensitive as I’ve read they were in the past. I pretty much deleted everything and created my own folder structure and nothing crazy happened except that the icons/tabs on the device couldn’t find the content anymore which wasn’t ideal but no emergency.

I ended up recreating the folders and contents to how they were despite it being weird how Akai shipped things (double folders etc). Akai support is really good and responsive. They told me they are working on a one click restore option for those who delete factory files or disrupt filesystem but offered to send me a zipped folder with OG content in the meantime when I reached out about deleting everything. They’ve been slower than usual recently but it’s understandable given how popular Live 3 has been.

I like looking and seeing that I have 978gb of free space for sampling. Comforts me somehow.

Understandable. No judgment but is it possible you’re a space junky?

You’re not kidding. I filed what I thought was a bug report at midnight last night and they responded this morning, very politely telling me what I was doing wrong and providing detailed instructions (including screenshots) of how to make the MPC do what I wanted.

Well, yes technically it is possible.

With every sample megabytes melt away from my domain.

This is a great thing to be able to do but I’m always deterred by the idea of the card sticking out a bit from the back instead of sitting flush (at least on the L2). Never a problem for you, I assume?

Now you gotta tell us what you were trying to do!
