MPC Thread : MPC Live - MPC X - MPC One (Part 2)

This is at least Season two, possibly season three! I see a theme here!

Except I think we all know how it’s going to end :smirk:

You and the MPC walk off into the sunset while the credits roll?

Yeah. That :slightly_smiling_face:

I don’t think my music ventures will ever have a defined beginning or end. In fact, the answer to time’s infinity probably lies somewhere in my musical adventures.

Make me a downtempo lofi study banger before you sell it please.

It plays back just fine when I hit Save Project here?

Yes, I think Maschine+ might work out better here. For the more straightforward workflow and the quality of sounds. I also find the song mode is better with the addition of clips compared to MPCs. Not saying Maschine is better than an MPC in all ways, but I could see @circuitghost preferring it.

Really? Not here and even stops playback if I save a program. I’m externally synced, dunno if that matters.

How I imagine @circuitghost first night with the MPC went…

Possibly. It definitely works just fine to save and play back a sequence with an internal clock fwiw. I do it every five minutes. :joy:

Sample worthy

This. Tho in undies only.

I’ll take that flag with my coat on the way out.

I just ordered an MPC One+ (on its way), mainly because I’m curious to try after all these years.

One of the uses I’m thinking of is simply use it as a Drum Machine sequenced externally. Simply create drum kits, load them and play them from the DAW. As I have no idea of the data structure of the MPCs, could anybody point me towards the right terminology and maybe help me to imagine the workflow ?

Thanks !

I believe @peaceful has a similar use case except that it’s sequencing drum parts which are mapped to keystep pro’s drum track instead of from the DAW. Perhaps check a few of their posts in this thread as I recall them mentioning the setup, or perhaps they’ll give an opinion on how to get the most out of external drum sequencing. Congratulations on buying your first MPC, I hope it’s inspirational for you!

Congrats on the MPC One+. I have a Live 2, and it is cool, but there are limitations, particularly with the use case you suggest.

As @shigginpit says, I have used the MPC like this, but I sequenced it from a Keystep Pro. It worked, and I am sure it would work from a DAW also. But… why? In Ableton Live for instance, it would be just easier to use a drum rack with samples. Or if you want to use MPC packs, you can use the MPC 2 software as a VST and trigger it that way. If you got the One+ new, I think it comes with the MPC 2 software - my Live 2 did.

I really suggest using the MPC primarily as the driver for creation. (Though @djst has a hybrid workflow for post-production which is definitely worth considering.)

The main reason is the midi note off bug which has been infamously not fixed for several years. It means you can’t reliably use the MPC as an externally sequenced multi-timbral module which would be an amazing use case. Also it could be an amazing driver of sales for MPC plugins, so it is baffling they haven’t fixed it.

The other reason is that certain plugins really require the MPC to be the master clock to the extent of being broken otherwise.

MPC platform is great for beatmaking in any genre, but if you choose to use an external clock or want to use more than a single channel midi input, you can hit frustrating showstoppers.

Good luck!

The midi off issue is so strange, there has to be a fundamental issue which is stopping this from getting fixed. Otherwise, Akai are just lazy which I’m hoping it’s the reason.

Many thanks for the answers, very helpful.
And scary. This MIDI issue is going to be a serious problem.
