I was gonna mention that but didnât want to be that guy, so thank you!
As someone whoâs considering getting an MPC One without any prior MPC experience, whatâs everyoneâs opinion here on the following:
Thereâs the MPC One and the MPC One+. I like the machines in either black or retro style. The red one is a bit too much for my taste.
On the other hand. the One+ has greater storage for future expansions/synts (?) and if I understood correctly, the One can only be updated via ethernet?
Given the above, which version of the One would you guys recommend?
Exactly. Those are the main differences.
I got my One second hand, cause I couldnât digest that red color (buying new).
After having dealt with ethernet cables to upgrade and activate plugins a couple times already, I wish I could use WiFiâŚ
A used MPC Live will cost you less than a new MPC One and will have better I/O, an integrated battery, an expansion slot for an SSD, Wifi & BluetoothâŚif you like the form factor, it could be worth your consideration.
Get the One+ & some black tape then asks what would MacGyver do?
Thanks for the input here.
Iâve been going back and forth on Live II vs One(+) but I think the additional ins and outs + the speaker arenât really necessary for me.
I also like the form factor of the One(+) more and generally that itâs smaller.
In fact, Iâd even prefer the Live I over the Live II, at least looks-wise.
I was actually looking around if they are any good outlets for MPC One(+) skins, but no luck so far.
Would you say the internal storage of the One would become an issue? Iâve read that users are better off using additional SD Cards anyways and leave anything firmware/plugin related on the internal storage.
This is something I could imagine becoming a problem if you have too many plugins or firmware gets too big.
ExactlyâŚ
Never save to the internal storage on ANY MPC/Force!
Use an SD/SSD. Also with ins & output, thinking you wont need more is the worst form of beat maker self-delusion ever.
Again, no prior MPC experience here.
Am I understanding correctly that plugins/add-ons are not installed on that external SD card, but on the internal storage, and therefore this could become a problem the more plugins are being released?
I guess one can always pick and choose and uninstall if necessary?
Ah, i see youâve edited your original reply.
So updates and plugin activation only works via ethernet eh?
Thatâs a big downside in my opinion.
So probably better to get the One+ and somehow get a black skin.
Thereâs a limited set of plugins available from Akai. You wonât be able to load any of your own plugins into the MPC. Plugins are automatically installed onto the internal drive. Thereâs also the OS & factory library installed to that drive. You donât want to touch that drive, no user-driven deletions or installations onto that drive ever! So that means youâll have to add storage to your MPC, either via SD card to the MPC One or via SD Card or SSD drive to the MPC Live. Thatâs where youâd save your projects, samples, etc.
You definitely shouldnât have a storage issue should additional plugins be released, RAM is going to be an issue before that (in other words donât worry about that).
Updates via Ethernet would be a no-go for me. But your experience may vary. I dislike the red of the MPC One+ (dislike the red on my MPC X intensely also ), but if you can find it for a decent price, Iâd spring for that.
Thanks, this is very helpful
Just throwing this in the mix. I owned a One and within a year I sold it and bought a Live II. I didnât think Iâd need the extras, but the deeper I dove in to it I found I did. And honestly, the speakers are pretty handy.
To combat the Ethernet only on the One you could get a cheap $20 ish dollar WiFi extender with an Ethernet port. Takes a few minute for the initial setup but after that your good to go!
If you intend to get those paid plugins, One + comes with one free between OP4X/Minimoog and Jura.
One can get the internet with an Android phone with internet tethering mode. No ethernet cables required.
Not planning on changing phone.
It really sounds like youâd be better off with a used black Live II! The battery power is great
Nah, itâs not crap. It has fewer effects and the pads are a bit rough but if youâre already familiar with the MPC workflow itâs fine.
I personally donât really see myself using these speakers a lot. I prefer using headphones, so I wonder if itâs worth the extra $
