It’s ok if we disagree
I think Alien is ok, and that 2001 is unbelievably good, and that Fury Road is dull. Just my view on things. I don’t think the conflation fits, for me anyway.
I think you misread
Ok to expand a little:
I absolutely agree with this, 100%.
I personally didn’t get anything from Fury Road myself and found it boring. Not because it basically has no plot, but because what it did have was long car chases, albeit on steroids, which didn’t grab me at all.
I think when it comes to actions scenes / fight scenes (I generalise massively here) I tend to find them boring unless they have some kind of point to support something greater - whereas in Fury Road the 2 long action scenes kind of are the point in themselves.
…I should also add - even though I didn’t care for Fury Road in the slightest, I’m still glad it exists. I find the vast majority of films for quite a while now stick to tried and tested formulas and structures, with little thought or even regard to film as a medium.
Speaking of experimental film, the recent experimental horror boom has been fun. I found a showing to go see In A Violent Nature this week, essentially an inverse slasher that follows the slow, plodding killer on his inexorable path to violence, rather than the victims. Early reviews make it sound like a really unique take on the genre
How was In A Violent Nature? Definitely curious, does it really subvert the genre as I’ve heard?
Also, on the fence about Furiosa, Fury Road is one of my favorite action films, hell, films of all time. I think it’s riveting and a lot of that for me is Charlize. Not sure if Anya is up to the task, but I love the whole series so I’m sure I’ll see it. Wish there was IMAX where I live.
This sounds amazing. Definitely keeping an eye out for this one.
I watched Civil War (2024) last night.
It’s a slow, gripping and grimy burn, but I love how it ended. Lots of similarities to Children of Men in the filmmaking to those of you who are looking for an excuse to see this.
I forgot this movie existed! I remember it being somewhat enjoyable/on par with Van Helsing. I think…
Seeing it this Wednesday. I’ll report back ![]()
-Watched Civil War (2024). Great soundtrack (Silver Apples , Suicide) hell yeah ! Liked it though it could have been better imo. Some great moments, i found the scene with Jesse Plemons truly terrifying and the ending was quite intense (it seemed realistic). Enjoyed it very much.
-When Evil Lurks : My favorite horror movie since… i dont know , it as been a while.
-Fallen Leaves (2023) , ho boy do i like Aki Kaurismäki and that was a wonderful movie (great soundtrack too).
-The zone of interest : Well this one was a very powerful movie.
-Beau is Afraid : Liked this one but i think it was too long.
-Mad God : This is a weird one and you really have to be in the mood but since i really like stop motion animation and a fan of Svankmajer, Brothers Quay etc it was a good surprise !
Didn’t like :
Talk to me : I don’t understand the craze, I like horror movies but i though it was absolutely awful.
Ghostbuster 2024 : Nop , tried to watch it with the kid and i couldn’t finish it.
I’m breaking the law by recommending a TV show but horror fans should definitely check out Them, especially season 2 as it’s very unhinged - the lead actor plays a deeply unsettling character. Really good.
Absolutely rock solid horror that is ![]()
Yeah, pulls zero punches.
Thank god furiosa exists. So done with the marvel movies milk.
Agreed! As soon as I recognized his face from far away I knew we were in for something sinister. I just rewatched the USS Callister episode he was in on Black Mirror and he’s brilliant there as well.
I recommend you check out Dream Scenario, with Nicolas Cage. It’s a bit more digestible than Beau, in my opinion, and shares a lot of thematic similarities. Kinda broke me in the end, though. (in a positive way)
This movie absolutely slaps - but there are also so (too!) many things I hate about the characters that I just can’t bring myself to fully embrace it. Totally respect how brutal and relentless it is and the world building is fucking amazing.
Do you have a favourite scene from it?
Very good!
The Skin I Live In - Pedro Almodóvar
I watched this film on a streaming service maybe 10 years ago and couldn’t remember the name of it but I knew it had a great soundtrack. The soundtrack was so good that I researched the artist and learned of Anders Trentemøller and the rabbit hole opened for a couple weeks.
I also appreciate modernist design so another reason the film stood out for me.
Anyway, Anders Trentemøller does the music and it stars Antonio Banderas.
I found the film again by looking through my “likes” at SoundCloud and noticed a David Lynch track (Pinky’s Dream) remixed by Trentemøller that I’d saved. I then researched soundtracks by Trentemøller and here we are.
Hope you will enjoy my film and music recommendation.
/cheers
Edit: Trentemøller didn’t do the entire soundtrack apparently. My apologies. It seems I may have been watching The Skin I Live In and heard a track in the film that I wanted more info about. I then learned of Trentemøller.
The first chunk of the movie—with the guy in the tiger costume—is fantastic. It drops off a bit from there unfortunately and becomes a bit more ordinary. But I love Almodovar and have seen every single feature he’s made from Pepi Luci Bom onward. This one is worth seeing, for those curious. Pain and Glory is surprisingly great though if you haven’t seen it. Definitely recommended.
Have you seen any Julio Medem films ?
Vacas, La ardilla roja, Tierra, Lucía y el sexo…
That I love Spanish cinema.
