After I mentioned Oliver Stone’s movie Natural Born Killers in the ‘counter culture’ films of your youth thread, I thought it was worth refreshing myself with this film, as it’s been ages since I’ve seen it. I was curious to see how the film had aged, as it was released almost 30 years ago.
So I just watched it and to my surprise it was very good. The film is very visionary, mixing many different filming techniques - sitcom, music video, TV reportage and animation. All mixed together in quick cuts. Interesting play with coloured light.
The whole film is exaggerated, but in a good way. Robert Downey Junior and Tommy Lee Jones really gave a great performance.
The film really was very enjoyable to watch and if you’re not put off by the intense on-screen violence and fast editing, I highly recommend watching it.
And one more thing - the soundtrack is great. I knew there were a couple of Nine Inch Nails tracks on there, but I only found out today that Trent Reznor was responsible for all the music and song selection, and Burn was written particularly for this film:
