Is there some solution (app / hardware) which is specially good in dealing with longer structures?
I see it a bit complicated to find sequencers which can have basic units like 8/16/32 bars long song structures which you can play like patterns. You normally have either pattern sequencers up to 256 steps or time line type midi multitrackers. On the other hand in Logic you now have Live Loops mode but in my experience it does not work 100% solid and more importantly Logic does not sync to external MIDI. As said in first post I have Numerology in my mac as my ”mother sequencer” which is amazingly flexible if you learn to use it (which takes some time) but some things are difficult to implement and many things are not very handy. One particular challenge with Elektron’s is that you need to send Prog Change messages in exact time little before your song gets to next stage.
Pyramid is quite good at this, each of the 64 tracks in a pattern can be as long as you want to be basically (and different lengths each). I suppose Hapax will be similar in that respect, but I haven’t looked into it too much.
I have been sneaking around the midiphy SEQv4 a couple of times but never really understood, which parts are included in the kits and which parts ought to be ordered separately, so I eventually gave up on that project.
Maybe Elektron could make a ”Elektron Mother” a unit which is meant to sequence and control Elektron based gear (along with other gear)….? For example there is Song Mode in Digitone and in Monomachine it was more flexible but both are limited and not very live oriented.
Yes, that is a possibility. It would have been a very interessting and challenging project, but as I allready wrote, I found it overly complicated to find out, what parts are needed, so I eventually gave up.
WOW. This thing looks nuts. Quite an ambitious project. Had I known about this during the indie gogo campaign, I would have certainly taken the leap of faith.
I’ve realized I prefer screens to button combos, which is probably why I really like the Push 3 and have had a bit of a hard time with the learning curve on Oxi One (which I haven’t given up on in the slightest yet).
Is it cabable of complex midi sequencing? I mean mostly longer patterns, song structures, CC ja Pgm Change sequencing, live orientation, cabable of controlling several midi destinations at once. Are there Midi routing / filtering / modulation options?
I ask this because I mostly see videos about using it more dawlike. I am after only midi ”mother sequecer” like title of this thread says….
Btw there’s one big challenge to have a ”Mother Seq” to control Elektron hardware (other than Elektron made): if you wanna switch externally Elektron patterns on the fly and in sync you need to send Program Change messages little before actual pattern change. This makes things quite difficult. Has anybody managed to do this cleverly with other brands sequencer?
Some pattern-based sequencers which can respond to program change messages to select
other patterns or scenes may take a short time to respond to those messages.
This can mean that program changes recalled with an advancing Cirklon scene don’t take
effect until 1 bar later.
By setting the pre-send pgm value to on, any stored program changes for the instrument will
be sent well in advance of the next Scene change.
Users of Elektron boxes, Korg Electribes or other groove-type-things, might find this very
welcome.
