Morningstar mc8-pro with Octatrack

I’ve recently added an mc8-pro for MIDI foot control of my Octatrack. It seems like a pretty capable and flexible box. Anyone else use Morningstar stuff with an OT?

Yep! I’ve used my MC6 pro for a few octatrack performances. Mostly moving through patterns, but also expression pedals doing all sorts of different movements.

Using MC6 with OT for live looping. Morningstar is a great company.

I’d be curious to know about the different uses possible with this pair.

I’ll update the thread as I build things out. At the moment, I’m most excited about the easy expression control over multiple tracks/parameters with my feet. I do a lot of live looping where I use multiple recording buffers and being able to control them simultaneously is really nice.

Multiple recording buffers? With the OT? I find it hard to figure out how practical it is to control parameters with a simple push from the feet

Yep! I’ll do stuff where I have three buffers of different lengths constantly recording the same input, then another buffer to do one-short samples of the cue from those.

I’m hung up on something that I thought would be feasible. I want to use an expression pedal to control track volume for groups of tracks. I might want to just control track 1 or 8, but I might also want to adjust 2/3/7 simultaneously. You can explicitly program the groups, but I want to select them dynamically.

My plan was to have a page that let me select which tracks are in the expression control group. Then I would have used the state of the tracks to impact whether the expression controlled it. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem feasible.

Any suggestions for a workaround?

Better looking into the Morningstar forum. The octatrack will do it if it gets the right info

I have a thread over there. No help so far. Pretty dead forum.

I did send an email to their help, too.

Honestly, I’m waffling about keeping it and would need to return it soon.

Maybe you could assign different groups to different scenes and switch to scenes with the Morning Star?

I don’t think you can switch scenes via MIDI. That’s a weird limitation of the Octatrack.

Dammit. Anyway i guess it would be odd to select scene numbers with a pedal.
I thought the CC63 or 64 was used for the crossfader though.

CC48 is the crossfader. I stumbled across that one yesterday after being surprised it wasn’t in the manual.

EDIT - it is in the manual. I missed it.

Mmmm I am not very expert of OT but “My plan was to have a page that let me select which tracks are in the expression control group” it’s not possible directly. I would assign the different expression control group in different banks of the mc8

On the OT, MIDI CC 55 (value 0 to 15) is transmitted or received for selecting Scene A.

MIDI CC 56 does the same for Scene B.

Thank you!

My bad, I knew it existed although I never used it, wrong number  I didn’t even suspect it wasn’t in the manual but I saw the info several times on the forum.

If there are also CCs for scenes then it opens up great possibilities!

It is in the manual. I’d missed it and chatgpt had “confirmed” it wasn’t in the manual. Hallucinations are annoying.

They should trained AI to not say BS. Especially with so much confidence.
