Moog Messenger

£699 at Andertons. Surprised, figured it’ll be around the GM price at launch, around £1k. Guess it’s that inmusic scale in effect.

This is going to be really hard to resist, especially if it sounds like the Sirin… what can I sell?

I think I prefer the model d :sunglasses:

Not mutch to say… The 5 minutes I invested make it look like ‘been there, done that’…?
Subharmonicon, labyrinth seemed more like unique devices.

They still released them though recently, so maybe we can have both?

I think it’s a good thing that the premium brands like DSI and Moog are starting to offer synths that more people can afford. Especially after their other synths have become so expensive over the last years.

The more I hear the more I like it, lots of lovely dirty sounds as well as rich warm tones. Impressed by the degree of modulation options and I like the screenless interface. The arp/sequencer is surprisingly advanced. I don’t usually GAS over monosynths in this price range but I’m dying to play this, sequence it with an A4 and/or OT, effect it, sample it…

Oh for sure.
The marketing imho does it a disservice.
Putting it as something esoteric to then be a solid bread/butter mono synth but with some added twists in the modulation and filter department.
Seeing it at 699$, if say it’s fair for the Moog name, but for those interested I’d hint towards a monologue.

If an analg mono synth is what you can’t and don’t have mono synths yet this seems like a fine option.

I just personally find it rather uninspiring.

I get the strangest feeling watching videos of the Muse and Messenger—as if Inmusic had created a new Moog prototype, then figured out what the Behringer knockoff of it would be like, then manufactured that.

Rationally speaking, it seems like the new Moogs will work fine, since Inmusic’s MPCs are solidly made and sound good; but some irrational part of me keeps thinking, “These new Moogs look/sound cheaper.” Then I wonder if I’m hearing with my eyes, or based on negative expectations. Very strange.

The sound demos at the end off the loopop video are quite convincing.

Then again, personally I haven’t heard an outright bad synth in quite a while.
For me tha major difference, especially when paired with efx is more ‘how do they lead me to play them’, or “workflow” how many would say…

(Not to diss this one, it sound like a good mono synth, alright)

This very much looks like it’s made for the stick it in a bag, hands on live environment which is a great thing for lots of people. Can imagine these on stages all over the place.

This feels like an interesting topic in itself.

I watched loopop’s vid. Very impressive synth. Adds some sounds that my Subsequent 37 can’t do with the wavefolding and filter options. Seems to have some aggressive sounds, if that’s your thing. The note pool and probabilistic stuff is nice to have on board.

Cons: LFO2 is very limited. The button pressing looked tedious for the casual user.

???: I probably missed how glide is implemented. Any promise of a software editor/manager?

I tend to use my Subsequent 37 from an Init patch when I turn it on. Using Messenger like that looked feasible, but I think I’d be diving into the manual for the config things a lot. Which would lead me to storing patches, but with no names it would be kind of annoying.

One other thought: the oscillator shapes looked very crisp on loopop’s scope thing.

Wanna open it?

The sounds from the Loopop vid are definitely convincing. Sneaky addition of bass comp for filter resonance makes me wonder “why now?”

Generally I like the small but significant new tweaks and features Moog has been sneaking in, like wavefolding. Between that and feedback, this thing will be a bass monster and good for a stage setting. I expect them to sell pretty well

The problem is he could probably make a kids toy casio keyboard sound good!

Nah, it’s aether’s post, and they may not have more to add.

It was just one of those moments that struck me as a potentially interesting off-topic detour.
