I have Labyrinth in a small 84 hp case with Maths, which gives the Labyrinth some modulation, envelopes, attenuation, and even a clock divider which is very useful.

I try not to buy this thing but it’s in my mind for weeks… seems to be a super fun machine.

I already have an Edge, and with DT2 and Typhon they are enough to create the sound I’m after (stripped back minimal/perlon and rpr style)…

and yet I can’t stop watching the demo videos.

is there any max4live sequencer which is similar to the Labyrinth’s?

Curious if there is an issue with mine. Is it not possible to hear both VCOs without FM? For instance if I have MOD-VCO FM AMT at zero, RING MOD at zero, FOLD at zero, parallel order with blend all the way to right (VCF), LP fully open and both VCOs turned up, I can clearly still hear bell like FM tones.

Try keeping both the VCO LVL down and MOD VCO LVL down.

They saturate or distort pretty quickly.

@LyingDalai pointed this out to me with a very similar question when I first got it too.

Thanks for the reply but yeah I am keeping both levels below 12 o’clock.
I also tried this duophonic patch with no luck (Same FM sound as before and not separate duophonic VCOs as in the video).

In fact, this presented another issue - my mixer is not functioning! With the patch in that video, I can always hear a blend of MVCO and noise no matter the position of the mix knob. Think my unit is borked.

To have no inter-modulation I need to keep both levels bellow 9 o’clock.

And both oscillators start to clip at 12 when they are alone.

This synth has gorgeous clean tones but the span for these is very narrow.

A pity there is no OSC 1 out.
The patch bay is very frustrating.

Btw, I suggest to use a compressor/limiter behind the Labyrinth cause wave folding adds a lot of harmonics and the general volume level rise is rather unmusical to me.
(And as for FX, a delay doesn’t hurt)

Also remember that the VCO’s are being sequenced by different sequencers. Patch seq 1 CV out to Mod osc v/oct in to ensure that both oscillators are tracking the same pitch.

Which mix knob are you talking about? “U MIX 1 LVL”?

I believe it’s pretty safe to say there are chances your unit works as intended.
On the Labyrinth, some aspects are not always obvious, so it’s easy to assume something works in a way, when it does something else than what is expected.

Today has been my first day with the Moog Labyrinth. I have noticed a weird behavior on the sine wave. For clarification, no modulation is applied whatsoever. I wonder if someone have noticed the same or if it is just my unit.

I am ok not being a pure sine wave, meaning there are harmonics (even if they are under 40 dBc in some cases) but I was surprised by seeing some big spurs as well. In this example, I have tuned at C2, and you can see a strong presence of G note as well, being G3 only around 9-10 dB from the carrier! I guess it’s the same on all the units, but just checking with you if your units exhibit the same behavior.

It saturates very fast, so you only get a sine under 9 o’clock, iirc.

Can any labyrinth owners clue me in on how to imitate the sequencers with eurorack modules?

It seems like two Turing machines having their signals mixed and then run through a quantizer. Am I right about that signal flow?

I love the labyrinth sequencer concept but I want to use it to control other synths and take up less space

There is this mix knob on the labyrinth that I believe mixes between two Turing machines.

I guess you can mix two outputs of the bloom but I’m imagining something more immediate. Or maybe I’m wrong about what it does

Well, I wasn’t implying that you didn’t or should have searched. I just thought that it might be relevant if you hadn’t seen it previously.

I can only assume that the trig mix knob increases the number of steps which receive substitutions as the value increases and that the substitutions are made by interpreting 2 notes, probably on different steps, one from each sequencer, and then the machine picks one or the other thus randomly substituting the step value(s).

There may be something else going on like the trig mix knob starts pulling step values from steps further apart in the sequence the higher you turn it, but as it’s already randomized I’m not sure there’s much functional value in doing that if it actually does work that way because while it’s like shuffling the cards an extra time, the initial randomness is more likely to be inadvertently ordered by re-randomizing than it is in it’s initial random substitution so that’s why my guess is that it’s a pretty straightforward operation (not that I would know how to recreate it).

Anyways, there’s an element of “left door / right door” which you need to address to mix the two sequencers in such a way. It has to be able pick a direction at random, and to do it at the desired point and interval.

The clever thing about the labyrinth is the way that they’ve simplified the interface for doing this and also in that it seems to perform as intended, however I’m pretty sure you can substitute that integration for modules that behave similarly and achieve a result that performs well enough so as not to feel that it’s totally lacking in comparison to the moog unit.

My interest in the Labyrinth got piqued again recently. I’ve been buying a lot of Basic Channel, Maurizio, and Rhythm & Sound dub techno 12”’s lately, and noticed a Labyrinth shout out in this hypnotic techno video below. I was thinking it might be fun to just pair it with my Roland TR-6S and effects for some meditative music sessions. I had originally considered adding it to do some generative stuff with my Moog Grandmother, so that’s another possible use case.

What are people’s thoughts now that the honeymoon period is over?

I noticed this one as well, but it’s a bit hard to pin down the Labyrinth sounds as he has fm synths and drums from Ableton.
