I would say It only becomes noticable when used at high(er) feedback like you said. Using lfo s and filter, or pretty much all the other parameters to get it interesting really works wonders. I remember making a nice pad with the LFO on one shot controlling the del parameter on the chorus. You could use trig tracks so your sound source is synced to the effect track aswell.
